Gymnastics Falls Short at Kent State

Jolene Worley posts the third highest all-around total in school-history with a 39.175
KENT, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team posted season-best scores in nearly every event, but it was not enough to upset defending MAC Tournament champion Kent State, 195.775-193.825, here Sunday afternoon at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. Sophomore Jolene Worley shined with a second place finish in the all-around competition.
With the victory Kent State improves to 4-3 (3-1 MAC) while Easterm Michigan drops to 3-6 (3-2 MAC).
Worley’s overall score of 39.175 is a personal record and the mark is also the third highest all-around total in school-history. The sophomore also tied her personal-best mark of 9.825 on beam and tied her best score of the season on floor with a 9.825. Her performance on beam tied for first place honors while her score on floor earned her a third place showing.
Sophomore Tawna Bennett claimed the individual championship on the vault with a 9.900, which is tied for the second highest mark on the event in school history. Freshman Zu Vuong and Monica Lucas also turned in a personal bests on the vault with a 9.850 for a third place tie. As a team, the Eagles posted a season best 49.050.
Kent State ran away with the uneven parallel bars posting a score of 49.050, as the Golden Flashes placed five gymnasts in the top five slots. Worley was the Eagles' top finisher on the event with a 9.750 and a tie for fourth.
Worley's total of 39.175 was good enough for second place in the all-around. Junior Rebecca Fuss turned in a season high score of 38.775 for fourth place while Zu Vuong finished fifth with a 38.125.
Overall, the team scored 49.050 on vault, 48.200 on bars, 47.750 on beam and 48.825 on floor. The overall score of 193.825 is a season-best mark for EMU.
The Eagles continue their 2006 campaign Tuesday, Feb. 26, traveling to Collegeville, Pa. for a dual meet with Ursinus College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
