Sophomore Named Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio—Eastern Michigan sophomore Madeleine Pilchard (Marietta, Ga.-George Walton) was named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Dec. 3, the conference office announced today. This marks the second time that Pilchard has received the weekly honor.

The MAC Scholar Athlete Award is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.

Pilchard, who boasts a 3.95 GPA with an accounting major, swam MAC season-best times in three events to help the Eagles to a second place finish during the annual ten-team EMU Invitational. Pilchard swam league top-times in the 100 freestyle (50.59), 200 freestyle (1:49.51) and 500 freestyle (4:54.12). Her marks in the 100 and 200 freestyle were NCAA ‘B’ cut times and surpassed the previous meet record. The 2006 MAC Swimmer of the Year also anchored the winning 200 freestyle and second place 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams.

The Eagles (4-2, 2-1 MAC) will take the next few weeks off for finals and training before resuming the season Jan. 12, when they host IUPUI at Jones Natatorium for a 6 p.m. meet.
