EMU was led by junior Patrice McKinney who scored 24 points, including 18 in the second half.
The Terriers pulled out to a 12 points advantage, 45-33, with 13:50 in the game, but the Eagles responded with a 19-6 run capped off by a fast break lay-up by McKinney, giving EMU a 52-52 lead with 7:51 to go. An ensuing 10-3 Terrier run would give BU a six point lead it would not relinquish.
With the loss EMU falls to 2-3 on the season, while the Terriers improve to 4-3.
McKinney registered her ninth career double-double adding 16 rebounds to her 24 points. Freshman Emily Hanley also recorded a double-double scoring 11 with 10 rebounds. Senior Sarah VanMetre also chipped in with 10 points, while grabbing eight boards.
The teams exchanged baskets to start the game, with the Eagle leading 6-5 with 15:32 on the clock. The Terriers pulled ahead 17-6, after a 12-0 run over the next five minutes. EMU was able to cut the lead to four, 20-16, after a lay-up by VanMetre with 5:24 remaining. The Eagles made just one field goal after the VanMetre bucket, and BU take a 27-20 lead into the half.
Poor shooting plagued EMU in the first half as they made 8-of-32 shots from the field including an 0-of-9 clip from behind the three-point arch. A tough Eagles’ defense was able to keep them in the game.
The Eagles will return to the court Wednesday, Dec. 6, for a 7 p.m. home contest with intra-state rival Detroit.
Additional Game Notes:
For the second straight game, EMU head coach Suzy Merchant was not on the Eagles' sideline. In her absence, longtime assistant coach Shane Clipfell coached the team. Merchant, who is expecting her first child in late December, did not travel with the team after advisement from her physicians.
With the setback, EMU fell to 22-13 during in-season tournament games since the 1998-99 campaign.
Saturday evening’s game marked the first time that EMU and BU have faced each other.
