YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team defeated visiting Wayne State, 74-67, in an exhibition game, Nov. 3, here at the Convocation Center. Four Eagles scored in double digits, including freshman Devon Dumes (Indianapolis, Ind.- Decatur Central) who totaled 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting to lead EMU.

Sophomore Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.- Murray Wright) turned in a stellar outing with 13 points and six assists in 32 minutes of action. Junior Jesse Bunkley (Detroit, Mich.- CMA-Mott C.C.) registered 12 points and freshman Brandon Bowdry (Taylor, Mich.- Truman) chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

Wayne State's Krzyminski led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting to go along with six assists. Jason Saddler turned in a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the setback.

Bowdry hit a two-pointer from just outside the paint to open the scoring for the Eagles. Wayne State answered rolling off 15 points of their own, including a three point shot from Krzyminski, to take a 15-7 lead with 13:43 to play in the first half.

After trailing by as many as nine points, Eastern rallied to take a 22-17 advantage thanks en part to a 15-2 run capped off by consecutive three-pointers from Dumes.

The Eagles headed to the locker room with its biggest lead of the half at 12, 35-23, as sophomore Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) drilled a three with :25 seconds remaining in the period. Dumes led all scorers with nine points all via the three-pointer while Medlock chipped in six points, three assists and two rebounds.

Both squad's shot the rock well in the stanza as Eastern was 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the floor while WSU managed a 40.9 percent (9-of-22) clip. Turnovers were an issue for Division II Wayne State, as it tallied 16 in the period accounting for 15 of the Eagles points. On the flipside, EMU had only seven miscues, costing them a mere five points.

Following the intermission both teams struggled combining for just six points over the first four minutes of play. The Eagles still controled the score column at the 15:41 mark holding a 10 point edge, 37-27.

The pesky Warriors would not go way, as with 12:30 to play Wayne State pulled to within one, 41-40, via a 13-4 run. But a key three-pointer from Dumes with 12:16 showing on the clock pushed the Green and White's lead back to four, 44-40.

The Eagles pushed the margin to 13, 54-41, via a pair of senior Craig Cashen (Cincinnati, Ohio-St. Xavier) free-throws with 8:48 to go in the game. Once again Wayne State got an offensive explosion from Krzyminski (16 second half points) and senior guard Will Pierce (11 second half points) to cut the deficit to just four, 63-59, with 3:30 to play.

However, that would as close as WSU would get as EMU made clutch free-throws down the stretch to seal the 74-67 victory.

The Eagles open the 2006-07 campaign next Friday, Nov. 10, when they face Davidson at the John Thompson Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena.
