MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell to #16/17 Marquette, 95-62, Saturday afternoon here at the Bradley Center. The Eagles were led by sharp-shooting freshman Devon Dumes (Indianapolis, Ind.-Decatur Central) who was the only player in double figures dropping a career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field while connecting on 4-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc.

EMU (1-3) hung tough in the first half but could not withstand Marquette’s (4-0) hot shooting from three-point range coupled with its solid defense. The Golden Eagles hit 13-for-27 three-pointers for a 48 percent clip compared to Eastern which connected on 8-for-21 (38%) from downtown. EMU also committed 26 costly turnovers which accounted for 32 Marquette points. For the game, Eastern connected on 20-of-60 (33%) shots from the floor while Marquette hit on 32-of-69 (46%) shots from the field.

Marquette had five players in double figures paced by sophomore guard Dominic James who scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field.

EMU came out in the first half and took a quick 8-2 lead after a two free throws by Chris Knaub (South Bend, Ind.-St. Joseph’s-Jacksonville (Tex.) J.C.) at the 15:18 mark. Marquette then went on a 25-7 run over the next nine minutes to take a 27-15 lead with 6:02 left in the half. Both teams knocked down five consecutive three pointers with EMU hitting three and MU connecting on two making the score 33-24 at the 4:39 mark. Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the half with the Golden Eagles taking a 12 point lead, 44-32, into the locker room.

Jessie Bunkley (Detroit, Mich.-CMA Mott C.C.) connected on three consecutive free throws to open the second half pulling EMU within nine, 44-35. However, that would be as close as the Eagle’s would get as Marquette responded with a three-pointer on the other end and went on to outscore EMU 30-14 over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 74-49 lead. MQ hit a blistering 8-of-13 three-pointers (61%) in the second half en route to the 95-62 victory.

EMU continues its road stint for its next contest against intra-state rival Detroit Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m.
