DETROIT, Mich. –
The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell to the University of Detroit Mercy, 72-52, in non-conference action Wednesday night here at Calihan Hall. The Titans used a 7-0 run to open the game and effectively put the game out of reach, as the Eagles were never able to recover from the early hole.

With the setback Eastern drops to 1-4 on the young season while Detroit improved to 2-4.

A pair of Eagles reached double figures lead by sophomore Carlos Medlock with 11 points. Junior Jesse Bunkley poured in 10 to go along with Chris Knaub's eight second half points. Three Titans reached double figures in points led by Brandon Cotton with 22 points to go along side Rvyon Covile's double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.

EMU managed just 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the floor compared to 48.2 percent (27-of-56) for UDM. Detroit also controlled the glass, ripping down 41 caroms to just 28 for Eastern.

The Titans raced off to the early 7-0 lead with EMU unable to convert on its first five shots. Finally with 17:20 left on the clock, freshman Brandon Bowdry laid one off the glass to make it 7-2. The tempo and the scoring picked up the pace for both teams, as junior Brandon Bell poured in an early five of UDM's point to give the Red and White a five point edge, 12-7, with 15:17 to go in the half.

Detroit's pushed the lead to 11, 24-13, on a Covile jumper with 8:22 left in the half. Seven Titans posted points in the opening 16 minutes, as the balanced scoring continued the run for UDM as the margin grew to 14, 30-16, with 4:01 showing.

Eastern Michigan used a quick 4-0 spurt of its own to get the deficit back to 10, 30-20, but UDM's Cotton quickly laid his 13th point of the evening off the glass to get it back to 12 which sparked a 9-0 Detroit run over the period's final 2:30. The Titans held Eastern scoreless for the final 3:02 to take a 39-20 lead into the break.

UDM shot lights out hitting a blistering 55.2 percent (16-of29) from the floor compared to just 25.8 percent (8-of-31) for the Eagles. Detroit also out-rebounded EMU by six (20 to 14) in the opening stanza.

Just three Eagles scored in the opening 20 minutes, led by Medlock with nine points. Bowdry poured in six points while Bunkley added five. For Detroit, Cotton led all scorers with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Covile controlled the glass grabbing a half-best seven rebounds.

The second half was dominated by Detroit as the Titans opened the period on a 10-5 run capped off with an easy Covile layup at the 15:41 mark to make it 49-25. UDM continued to expand the lead to as many as 36 points, 67-31, en rote to the 72-52 victory.

The Eagles will look to get back on track when they open the home portion of the schedule Tuesday, Dec. 5, hosting Oakland University at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center. Separated by just 50 miles, the meeting will be the first between the teams since Nov. 23, 1996 when EMU posted a 94-76 decsion at Bowen Field House.
