ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball fell, 80-51, to cross-town rival Michigan here at the John Thompson Challege held at Crisler Arena on the campus of the University of Michigan. For his three day performance, sophomore Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) was named to the All-Classic team.
EMU (1-2) had no answer for Michigan’s (3-0) front line which accounted for 44 points in the paint. The Eagles shot 16-for-49 (32%) from the field and connected on 4-of-18 (22%) three-pointers while U-M hit 32-of-65 (49%) shots and 3-of-16 (18%) from long range.
EMU had two players in double figures and was led by freshman Devon Dumes (Indianapolis, Ind.-Decatur Central) who tallied a career-high 14 points with on 3-of-10 shooting from the field. Sophomore Kyle Dodd (Rockwood Ontario, Canada-John F.Ross) chipped in a career-high 10 points connecting on 4-of-7 from the floor.
“We have to be more physical when playing a team like Michigan,” said head coach Charles E. Ramsey. “This kind of game will prepare us against future opponents. We have to test our team in a tough environment which will hopefully bode well in the long run.”
U-M came out of the gate and built a quick 11-2 lead by pounding the balled inside. EMU responded scoring the next seven points to cut the lead to 11-9. However, Michigan kept going inside and went on a staggering 26-6 run to take a commanding 37-15 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. The Wolverines did not stop there and closed out the half outscoring the Eagles 15-5 to take a 50-30 lead in the locker room.
EMU shot a dismal 7-for-28 (25%) from the field in the first half and was led by Chris Knaub (South Bend, Ind.-St. Joseph’s-Jacksonville (Tex.) J.C.) who had seven points on 3-of-4 shooting. Thirty of U-M’s 50 points in the first half were in the paint with Courtney Sims leading the Wolverines with 15 points.
The second half was more evenly matched with EMU outscoring U-M, 31-30, but the Eagles were unable to overcome the 20 point half time deficit. Dumes led the Eagles scoring 10 of his 14 points.
EMU hits the road for its next contest against Marquette on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m.
