KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Mark Bonds' 19-yard touchdown run with 5:04 left put Western Michigan University ahead for good in an 18-15 victory over Eastern Michigan University here Saturday afternoon at Waldo Stadium.
With the victory WMU remains in the hunt for the MAC West title with a 4-1 MAC mark and 6-2 overall while EMU falls to 1-7 on the year and 1-4 in the league.
The Eagles built a 15-3 edge through three quarters holding the Broncos to just a field goal through the first 45 minutes of play. The final 15 minutes would be a different story though, as the Western rallied for scoring drives of 65 and 50 yards in the final quarter to capture its second consecutive win over in-state rival Eastern Michigan.
Senior place-kicker Andrew Wellock's third field goal, a 26-yarder with 2:28 remaining in the third quarter, gave the Eagles a 9-3 lead. The Green and White saw the margin grow to 12 points, 15-3, on redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones' 16-yard pass to senior wide receiver Eric Deslauriers with 13:09 left in the contest.
But things were starting to fall in the favor of the Brown and Gold as Keith Schultz caught a 1-yard scoring pass from Ryan Cubit on fourth down with 10:22 left. Then Bonds, the game's leading rusher with 97 yards, broke free for his game-winning score to give the Broncos their first lead.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Andy Schmitt threw for a game-high 159 yards on 15-of-26 passes, but left the game early in the fourth quarter after sustaining his second injury of the game. His replacement, Jones, was sacked four times and intercepted once.
Schmitt also lead the Eagles on the ground with 43 yards rushing on 10 carries. Deslauiers caught six balls for a 85 yards and touchdown while senior Trumaine Riley added nine catches for 64 yards.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of Rynearson Stadium Saturday, Nov. 4, to host MAC East Division leader Ohio University. The contest has been designated as Band Day, so numerous high school bands will be on hand for a pre and post game concert. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
