Volleyball Dominates Ball State

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team swept a visiting Ball State University squad, 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-17), in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon here at the Convocation Center. With the victory the Eagles improve to 7-14 (2-8 MAC) on the season, while the Cardinals drop to 6-16 (3-7 MAC).
In the first set, the two teams battled back and forth until the EMU rolled off 10 quick points to take a 19-13 advantage lead. Ball State clawed back within a pair, 24-22, but were never able to pull any closer, as EMU took the first set by a score of 30-26. Freshman Victoria Randolph chalked up four kills and three digs in the game, while senior Lindsay Piccolini and junior Corey Calcamuggio added three kills.
In the second game, EMU jumped on the board first and cruised to a five-point edge, 8-3. BSU would not go quietly as the Cardinals once again hung close pulling within one point, 21-20. The momentum would swing back in the favor of the Green and White as Eastern pushed the lead back to five and cruised to the 30-25 decision to take a 2-0 mark heading in to the intermission.
At intermission, Eastern Michigan celebrated its 2005 MAC West Division championship by raising a banner to the rafters to commemorate the program's first division title.
In the finale the Eagles show why they captured the MAC West Division title, dominating Ball State by a 30-17 score. The teams traded points to open the set, but Eastern used a 17-7 run to close the game and the match.
For the match, EMU was paced by Piccolini with 19 kills and seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 assist) for a total of 23.5 points. Randolph nearly turned in a double-double with 11 digs and nine kills, while junior Becky Reenders chipped in nine kills. Junior setter Kate Sulewski recorded 40 assists, while senior libero Ashley Cudney posted 17 digs.
Julie Breivogel was the lone Cardinal to reach double-figures in kills with 12 as Elaina Kakatolis and Kelly Cochran added five kills.
The Eagles hit the road for the next three contest, taking to the court next against non-conference foe Oakland, Oct. 24. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the O'Rena in Rochester, Mich.
