YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team was shutout, 1-0, by intra-state rival Western Michigan here at Scicluna Field.
With the loss, EMU falls to 5-7-2 (2-5 MAC) while Western Michigan improves to 3-11-1 (2-5 MAC) on the season.
EMU out-shot WMU 16-8 and kept the pressure on through out the game but could not get the ball past Western goalkeeper Jessica Laning who made eight saves.
There was no scoring in the first half but the Eagles missed a golden opportunity when freshman Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) fired three consecutive shots in close at Laning who made the first two saves at point blank range with the third shot deflecting off a WMU defender.
In the second half, Western Michigan broke the scoreless tie as Mandi Marsh fired a shot from 20 yards out that sailed over the outstretched arms of EMU goalkeeper Monique Bundani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead at the 64: 55 mark.
EMU continued to press for the equalizer and nearly got it when sophomore Ashley Upton (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) fired a shot in close at Laning who made a diving save with the rebound going right back to Upton who then fired the next shot high over the goal.
EMU hosts Northern Illinois for its final home game of the season at Scicluna Field on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. The Eagles will honor its three seniors for their hard work and dedication to EMU soccer.
