OXFORD, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell in overtime to Mid-American Conference foe Miami, 64-59, here Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall in Oxford. Ohio.
Senior John Bowler (Chicago, Ill – Notre Dame) led the Eagles (3-7, 0-2) with a career-high 31 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Danny McElhinny (Hermitage, PA – Kennedy Catholic) connected 4-of-5 from behind the three point arch for a total of 12 points.
Eastern jumped out to a quick 19-6 lead with 9:51 remaining in the first half after a McElhinny three, the RedHawks chipped away as the Eagles took a nine point lead into the break, leading 28-19.
EMU relinquished the led with 12:26 after a lay-up by Tim Pollitz putting RedHawks (6-5, 3-0) up 39-38. The lead changed five more times in regulation. Two Miami free throws by Nate Vandersluis with 2:10 remaining knotted the score at 50-50.
In overtime, Pollitz connected on his second free throw attempt to break the tie. Bowler answered with a jumper to put the Eagles up 52-51. Vandersluis responded with a three pointer with 2:47 to give the RedHawks a 54-52 advantage. Miami would not lose the lead, as the Redhawks downed the Eagles for the 10th consecutive meeting.
William Hatcher led the Miami with 18 points while Vandersluis scored 17.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they host the Ohio Bobcats. Tip-off for the MAC contest is set for 7 p.m.
