Gymnastics Downs Ball State in Season Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Eastern Michigan University women’s gymnastics team defeated Mid-American Conference West Division rival Ball State University, 186.375-185.775, here at the Irving Gymnasium Friday night. Sophomore Jolene Worley, the 2005 MAC Freshman of the Year, picked up right where she left off capturing the all-around title with a total of 38.325.

With the win the Eagles start the 2006 campaign to 1-0 (1-0 MAC), while the Cardinals fall to 0-4 (0-2 MAC).

On the uneven parallel bars, Worley was the lone Eagle to claim an outright event championship with a 9.675. Junior Jennifer Charlebois also turned in a stellar performance claiming runner-up honors with a 9.650 while freshman Tawna Bennett took third with a 9.625 on the event.

On the vault, freshman Stefanie James took home third place honors with a 9.625 as Worley and junior Rebecca Fuss took fourth and fifth respectively with a 9.600 and a 9.525.

On the balance beam, Worley finished tied for third with score of 9.425 while Fuss placed eighth with a 8.900.

On the floor exercise, Worley and Fuss paced the Eagles finishing in a tied for first-place with a 9.625. James had another strong event for EMU finishing fifth with a 9.525.

Worley posted a 38.325 to take the all-around championship, finishing .325 points infront of BSU’s Kelly Watson. Fuss placed fourth with a 37.425 while Bennett finished seventh with a four-event total of 35.150.

The Eagles open the home season Friday, Jan. 27, versus instate rival Western Michigan University. The action gets underway at 7 p.m. in Warner Gymnasium.
