Late Ball State Rally Spoils Senior Day for Eagles
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University football team lost in heartbreaking fashion to visiting Ball State University, 26-25, here on Senior Day at Rynearson Stadium. EMU enjoyed a 25-7 fourth quarter lead before Ball State rallied for 26 unanswered points, capped off by a late touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in regulation. With the loss, EMU drops to 3-7 overall, 2-5 in the MAC and Ball State moves to 3-6 and 4-3 in the MAC standings.
"I was very disappointed for the seniors, the staff, the program and the fans, said EMU Head Coach Jeff Genyk, but I still believe that we are making strides and we have to learn how to finish games and make plays, but unfortunately we have not done that in the last six games."
EMU senior quarterback Matt Bohnet (Grand Ledge, Mich.-Grand Ledge) closed out his home career with a solid effort, completing 22-of-32 passes for 310 yards and one touchdown. Bohnet's second quarter 40-yard touchdown pass to senior Eric Deslauriers (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada-Lennoxville Prep) was the 33rd of his career, tying him for third all-time in EMU history with quarterback Robert Middlekauff (1951-1954). The touchdown grab by Deslauriers was also the 20th of his career moving him into a first place tie with current NFL receiver Kevin Walter who played at EMU from 1999-2002. For the game, Desluriers caught eight balls for 115 yards.
Junior placekicker Andrew Wellock (Canton, Ohio, Green) tallied four field goals of 27, 32, 47 and 37 yards respectively. His four field goals tie the EMU record held by five players, including his own four field goal game three times.
Also for the Eagles offensively, senior Anthony Sherrell (Roseville, Mich.,-Orchard Lake St. Mary's) tallied 116 yards on 26 carries.
"The kicking game was big, with the blocked punt and the punt return that B.J. (Hill) had late in the game," said Ball State head coach Brady Hoke.
On the defensive side, the Eagles were led by linebackers Michael Richardson (Indianapolis, Ind.-Ben Davis-Harper Ill. J.C.) and Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, Oak.–Enid) who had seven and six tackles respectively.
Ball State was led offensively by senior quarterback Joey Lynch who completed 17-of-33 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Senior linebacker Brad Seiss led the Cardinals with 17 tackles defensively.
EMU will be in action next weekend in their final game of the season at Buffalo on Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
