Defending champions win the battle of unbeatens
TOLEDO, Ohio--It was a battle for first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division here Saturday night and the defending champion Toledo Rockets proved up to the challenge, handing Eastern Michigan a 30-3 setback.
The win boosted Toledo to 4-1 overall and 3-3 in the MAC while EMU is now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league action.
For Eastern, the loss was tough to take as the Eagles came back from a 10-0 deficit to trail at the half, 13-3.
The Rocket defense came up with some big plays in the second half, however, holding EMU scoreless while notching 17 points for the 30-3 victory.
The EMU offense had a scare late in the first half when starting quarterback Matt Bohnet (Grand Ledge, Mich.-Grand Ledge) left the game with a bruised lower leg but the senior came back in the second half and finished the game with 14 completions on 28 attempts for 128 yards. Redshirt freshman Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) came on to replace Bohnet and completed 10-of-13 passes for 38 yards.
The EMU safeties, Corey Parker (Detroit, Mich.-DePorres) and Rontrell Woodruff (Southfield, Mich.-Lathrup) led the defense with 12 tackles each.
Eastern will attempt to get back on the winning track in another key MAC West Division contest next weekend (Oct. 15) at Northern Illinois. That game is slated for a 4 p.m. start in Ypsilanti.
