Football Falls to #14 Michigan, 55-0

The Eastern Michigan University football team saw its record fall to 1-2 on the year with a 55-0 shutout loss to a No. 14 ranked University of Michigan squad here Saturday (Sept. 17) in Michigan Stadium.
The shutout was the first for an EMU squad since the Eagles lost a 19-0 decision at Connecticut, Oct. 19, 2001. A total of 109,511 were on hand for the game, the second largest to see an EMU squad next to the 110,438 on hand the last time the two teams met, Sept. 19, 1998.
The Eagles entered this year's matchup with one of the top-ranked special teams in the nation and it was a breakdown in that very area that doomed the Eagles early.
Michigan's Steve Breaston ran back an EMU punt 72 yards to give Michigan the ball on the EMU 10-yard line on their first offensive possession.
After pushing across a one-yard touchdown on that first offensive possession, Michigan came right back on their next defensive series, forcing another EMU punt.
On the punt attempt, the ball was snapped over punter Andrew Wellock's (North Canton, Ohio-Green) head and Michigan recovered on the EMU 20-yard line.
Michigan then went up 14-0 three plays later, and the Wolverines went on to post 28 points in the first quarter to effectively put the game out of reach.
Michigan held the EMU offense to 134 total offensive yards on 54 plays while running 84 plays for a 465 yards in total offense.
