Shareese Ulis was named assistant coach of the women's basketball team, April 22, 2024, she begins her third season with the Eagles in the 2026-27 campaign.
In the 2025-26 campaign, Ulis proved instrumental to a bounce-back campaign where EMU improved by 11 wins from 2024-25, as it was one of the five most improved teams nationally by number of wins with its 13-16 (6-12 MAC) mark. The 11-win improvement matched the program's largest since it also improved by 11 wins in 2009-10.
Individually, Ulis oversaw the training of MAC Freshman of the Year, Peyton Hill, who was also named All-MAC Honorable Mention and earned a spot on the conference’s all-freshmen team.
Hill’s freshman of the year award marked EMU’s first since the 2013-14 season in a year which she paced MAC freshmen in points per game with 14.6 (ninth in the MAC), free-throw percentage (81.9%, sixth in the conference), and minutes per game (33.8, seventh in the MAC). She also led the league's rookies with 22 double-digit scoring games and seven games with 20-plus points.
Additionally, Eastern set a program record with a 74.9% (359-of-479) rate at the free-throw line and earned a signature non-conference victory over a nationally ranked mid-major opponent, Arkansas State, 76-73, Feb. 7. The Red Wolves entered the contest ranked sixth nationally among mid major programs and finished the season ranked 17th.
In the 2024-25 season, Ulis aided in the development of junior Sisi Eleko, who earned All-MAC Second Team honors after leading the conference in double-doubles with 14 while also pacing the MAC in rebounds per game (10.1), and ranking second with 17.9 points per game. Additionally, Eleko was the only MAC player to average a double-double.
Eleko also earned MAC Player of the Week recognition, Dec. 3, after averaging 27 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while leading the Eagles’ to their first win in the Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh era, a 72-60 victory over Xavier University, Dec. 1.
Mainly overseeing perimeter play, Ulis mentored Olivia Westphal, who ranked seventh in the league with an average of 2.1 three-point field goals per game while Olivia Smith placed 17th in the stat with 1.5 per game. Smith also slotted 10th in the MAC with 33.2 minutes per game. Other notables included Westphal also slotting 16th in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 35.5% on the year and ranking 15th in the MAC with 0.6 blocked shots per game.
Showing loyalty to Nusseibeh, former University of Cincinnati guard Ulis began her time as an Eagle after a two-year stint as part of the Canisius women's basketball staff under Nusseibeh's regime, focusing her attention on the Golden Griffins' point guards and combo guards as she was hired in July of 2022.
At Canisius, Ulis helped oversee the Griffs' win total improve to 17 overall wins and 11 conference victories in the 2023-24 season, the most wins in both categories since the 2008-09 season. With her mentorship, Athina Lexa was tabbed MAAC Sixth Player of the Year, the second Canisius player to ever earn the award and first since Ella Radke in 2008-09, while forward Sisi Eleko was a unanimous All-MAAC First Team selection. She also helped guide the team to its first berth in the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship since the 2008-09 season with their 58-55 win over Manhattan.
Prior to Canisius, Ulis was part of the Owens Community College coaching staff that helped lead the Express to the NJCAA Division III national championship after the team posted a 27-4 overall record in the 2021-22 season. While serving as the program's head of recruiting, she worked with and developed five All-America honorees, a National Player of the Year award winner and multiple all-conference, all-district and all-tournament team selections.
Prior to joining the staff at Owens Community College, Ulis served as a graduate assistant at Detroit Mercy for two seasons, where she was a part of all team operations. Before joining the Titans' staff, she spent three years making various stops at both the college and high school level. In 2013-14, she was an assistant women's basketball coach at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Mo., helping the squad finish with an overall record of 21-7. The Greyhounds also had five players sign with Division I programs following that season. She previously served as an assistant coach with her Alma mater Waite High School (2012-13) and Start High School (2011-12) in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio.
Ulis began her collegiate playing career at Trinity Valley Community College (2007-09) in Athens, Texas, where she guided the Lady Cardinals to the NJCAA National Tournament as a freshman and sophomore. As a sophomore, she averaged 12.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game, en route to being named all-conference and honorable mention All-Region 14. She later transferred to Cincinnati, where she started all 59 games in her two years with the Bearcats, averaging 11.4 points as a junior and 13.7 points in her senior campaign.
In high school, she was named the Toledo Player of the Year on three occasions, District Player of the Year twice, and was a member of the All-State Team two times. She was also nominated for the McDonald's All-American Team as a senior, and finished her career as the all-time leading scorer in Waite High School history.
Ulis earned her undergraduate degree in sociology from Cincinnati and later went on to earn her master's degree in liberal studies from Detroit Mercy.
