The 2022-23 campaign will be Carlos Adamson’s fifth season as an assistant coach on Fred Castro’s staff.
Adamson came to Ypsilanti with more than 10 years of experience at both the college and high school levels, having spent time in Oklahoma and Florida.
This past season, Adamson continued to take the Eagles' defense to newer heights. The team ranked third in the league in blocked shots per game (3.3) with 33 more total blocks than the season before. In terms of fewest fouls, EMU was third in the league with 457.
Additionally, Adamson aided in the improvement of the program on both sides of the court. Over the past season, the women showcased their discipline with the ball by leading the Mid-American Conference in fewest turnovers while also being ranked 24th in the nation within the same statistical category.
Individually, Adamson continued to help oversee the player development of both Areanna Combs and Ce’Nara Skanes. In 2021-22, Combs earned her third consecutive Second Team All-MAC honor as a senior while leading the team in points (18.2 per game), field goals (6.38 per game), free throws (5.04 per game), assists (3.6 per game), and steals (2.50 per game). Skanes was a huge contributor, becoming EMU's all-time double-double leader with 23 efforts sort. Leading the team in both boards (9.1 per game) and blocks (1.11 per game) in the 2021-22 season, Skanes helped EMU’s defense become what it is today, with the help of Adamson’s teachings.
In his third season with the Eagles, Adamson helped build yet another incredible defensive unit. The Eagles allowed just 62.2 points per game in 2020-21, which is the best of any team in the league. EMU’s field goal percentage defense was also first, as opponents shot just 37.1 percent against the Green and White. Additionally, EMU held its opponents to under 60 points eight times in 2020-21. The team won seven of those eight games, and have now emerged victorious in 34 of the 41 games in which it has held team’s under 60 points during the Fred Castro era (2016-Pres.).
Individually, Adamson continued to mentor Areanna Combs into one of the most valuable players in the conference. Combs collected Second Team All-MAC honors, and was also named to the MAC All-Defensive Team. 2020-21 marked consecutive seasons that Combs has been recognized on those teams, as she was named to both respective lists following the 2019-20 season. In 2019-20, she became the first EMU women’s player to earn either honor since the 2015-16 campaign when Cha Sweeney and Janay Morton were honored in the two categories, respectively. Combs is just the second Eagle in program history to earn all-defensive honors, and brings home the school’s 18th nod on the Second Team All-MAC list in 2020-21
In his second season with the Green and White, Adamson continued his notable transformation of the EMU defense. EMU’s defense established itself as one of the very best in the league in 2019-20. The unit allowed just 65.4 points per game, which ranked second in the MAC.
Additionally, the team held Toledo to just 46 points on Feb. 29, UT’s lowest point total in 25 games (Nov. 9 vs. Dayton). EMU followed that up by giving up just 53 to WMU, March 4. Eastern Michigan’s high intensity defense caused opponents fits this season. The Eagles forced the opposition into 15+ turnovers 22 times, while picking their pockets 10+ times in nine of their 29 games. EMU’s 17.8 forced turnovers per game were the third-most in the MAC in 2019-20.
Individually, Adamson also played a pivotal role in the development of junior guard Jenna Annecchiarico and redshirt senior guard Areanna Combs. Annecchiarico led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio for the second consecutive season, while Combs led the team and finished fourth in the MAC with a 2.3 SPG average.
In his first season with the Eagles, Adamson coached EMU into one of the top defenses in the league. Overall, the Eagles’ tallied 84 blocks, the 10th-most in EMU single-season history, while EMU ranked in the top-five in the conference in field goal percentage defense (39.6 - fourth), scoring defense (65.1 - fourth), steals per game (8.2 - fourth), and turnovers forced (16.81 - fourth).
Working primarily with the guards, Adamson coached Danielle Minott to an All-MAC Honorable Mention selection.
Prior to EMU, Adamson served as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Putnam City West High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. where he was tabbed as The Oklahoma Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2018. During his four-year stint, he guided the Patriots to an 81-20 overall record, a state runner-up finish (2018), a pair of area championships (2017 & 2018), three straight regional championships (2016-18), and two Big 10 Conference titles (2017 & 2018).
Prior to making the move to Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City, Okla. native spent three years at Hollywood Christian High School in Hollywood, Fla. There, he was named Coach of the Year by the South Florida Dairy Farmers (2011), Miami Herald (2011), and Broward County (2010). Under the tutelage of Adamson, HCHS became one of the top high school programs in the country. In addition to leading Hollywood Christian to its first-ever ESPN national ranking, the Challengers earned an ESPN Rise National Invitation in 2011 en route to their first Class 2A Florida State Championship in school history.
He served in a variety of roles at Seminole Tribe of Florida from 2004 to 2012, including basketball coordinator, recreation manager, and head girls basketball coach.
Adamson got his start as the Freshman Boys Basketball Coach at Norman North High School in 2001, before stops at Rose State College (2002-04) and Westlake High School (2008-09).
Adamson holds a bachelor’s degree in Recreation from Southwest Baptist University. He and his wife, Misty, have four sons, Jordan, Carlos, Cooper, and Carter, and one daughter, Cobe.
