Greg Steiner is in his 24th year with the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Media Relations Office and his first as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs. From Dec. 2004 until Oct. 2012, he was the office’s assistant director before serving as the assistant athletic director from 2012-16. He was elevated to Associate Athletic Director on July 1, 2016 and served in that capacity until Oct. 31, 2024.
In his new role, he will provide strategic leadership in media relations, marketing, sponsorships, and other revenue-generating functions along with acting as the sports administrator for baseball. The department’s chief spokesperson, Steiner also oversees the department’s broadcast and videoboard operations at all levels, including the department’s long-standing radio partnership with WEMU (89.1 FM), as well as other national partners, such as Learfield and ESPN.
He serves as the primary contact for the football team, while aiding in game-day help with nearly all 19 sports.
Additionally, Steiner has spent the last six years as the co-host of the Eastern Insider, the University’s weekly athletics podcast. He also directly oversaw and helped to implement the department’s 2020 partnership with INFLCR, a third-party content distribution platform that allows for increased analytic tracking and content reach.
On the national stage, Steiner has continued to be a vital part of the development of many of the field’s most important technologies. He was part of the NCAA’s National Statistical Committee and was part of the beta test for the new NCAA football stats program established by Genius Sports.
During his tenure in Ypsilanti, Steiner has directly promoted numerous Academic All-Americans and Mid-American Conference championship teams. He has instituted an aggressive approach to web development through a partnership with SIDEARM Sports to provide better online coverage of Eagle athletic events. During the 2017-18 season, page views to EMUEagles.com surpassed five million for the first-time.
Steiner also oversees the EMU-ESPN initiative and mobile production unit, in which EMU students receive valuable hands-on experience working with professional equipment and producing content for a national audience on ESPN3/ESPN+. Since its launch in 2015, EMU has produced 294 games for ESPN to go along with dozens more in-house productions.
In the recent years, Steiner has taken EMU’s video production and broadcasting capabilities to new heights. He helped plan and oversee a major reconstruction of EMU’s broadcast control room into one of the most state-of-the-art facilities in the Group of Five. The room is the first permanent broadcast facility in EMU Athletics’ history. In 2022, he oversaw the construction and implementation of the department’s first-ever broadcast studio, which led the Eastern becoming the first and only school in the Mid-American Conference to feature a live, in-studio halftime report during men’s and women’s basketball games. In 2021, EMU was one of just eight FBS schools to attempt a live signing day production of the ESPN family of networks. Aside from ESPN productions, Steiner has taken EMU’s in-house production service, Eagle All-Access, to new standards in 2021. He was able to implement live video streaming at EMU swimming and diving, and baseball events for the first time in department history.
In addition, he has worked as the play-by-play voice for radio and ESPN television broadcasts of EMU sporting events. In 2015, he took over as the host of the weekly 30-minute “All E Coaches Radio Show.” Well-known throughout the region, Steiner was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 and 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regional, the 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional, the 2009 Men’s Basketball Final Four, and the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four.
Since 2007, Steiner has been the linchpin of statistical operations for the MAC Football Championship games, MAC Basketball Tournaments, and MAC Baseball Tournaments.
Steiner worked as a student athletic media relations director at Eastern Michigan for three years. A 2003 graduate of EMU, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
During his tenure as a student assistant, Steiner was responsible for the development of the athletics department web site, as well as most of the office’s publications.
Steiner worked four years (2001-05) for WOHL television in Lima, Ohio, as videographer and co-host of “The Friday Night Frenzy” and “The Ottawa Oil Pre-Game Show,” a local high school sports show. He completed an internship at Bluffton University during the summer of 2002, where he assisted with the day-to-day operations of the sports information office.
A native of Bluffton, Ohio, Steiner graduated from Bluffton High School in 1999. He is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Steiner and his wife, Cathy, live in Ypsilanti with their dog, Cooper.
