Randy Stewart
Randy Stewart
Randy Stewart is entering his first year at EMU as the team’s linebackers coach. Stewart previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Fresno State University football team for the past three seasons.

Prior to his stint in Fresno, the 53-year-old Stewart served as an assistant football coach at the University of California, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, the University of Nevada-Reno, California Polytechnic State University and Boise State University.

A 1980 graduate of Boise State University, Stewart joined the coaching ranks in 1980 at his alma mater, where he served as special teams coach for two years. In 1982 he became the Broncos’ wide receivers coach before moving on to Cal Poly in 1987 to serve as the Mustangs’ linebackers and special teams coach, then as the school’s secondary and special teams coach from 1988-91.

From there he moved to Nevada in 1992 where he coached the defensive backs for the Wolf Pack. In his two seasons in Reno, he had two players - Forey Duckett and Brock Marion - drafted by the NFL. Stewart then moved to UNLV for the 1994-96 seasons, during which he served as the Rebels’ secondary coach. He helped the program to its first bowl berth in 11 years when UNLV won the 1994 Big West Conference crown.

Then in 1997 he joined the Golden Bears of Cal, where he served as the team’s defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for five years. He helped guide such players as Marquis Smith, a third round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns in 1999, and Deltha O’Neal, a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2000. Under Stewart, California led the Pac-10 in defense in 1999.

Stewart left Berkley for the Fresno Valley in 2000 to become a fixture in the Bulldogs’ success over the next decade. First coaching the defensive backs before adding the title of defensive coordinator beginning with the 2009 campaign, his Bulldogs’ defenses were among the nation’s best in pass efficiency defense.

With a habit of developing great players in the secondary, Stewart coached All-Western Athletic Conference  second-team pick Moses Harris in 2008. Both Harris and Lorne Bell were second-team All-WAC in 2009 and in 2010, Desia Dunn earned second-team All-WAC honors. With his help, the 2010 defense was second in the WAC in pass defense limiting opponents to 208.77 yards in the air.

FSU notched a shutout in Stewart’s first game as defensive coordinator against UC Davis and two Bulldogs, end Chris Carter and linebacker Ben Jacobs were selected first-team All-WAC. Carter was also named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.  The Bulldog pass defense was ranked No. 32 in the nation at 199.62 yards a game.

The Dogs ranked third in the WAC for pass defense in 2007, and were fourth in the conference and 24th in the nation for passing efficiency.  In 2005, he led a secondary that allowed a WAC-low 15 touchdown passes and had four players taken in the NFL Draft over a three-year span.

Fresno State’s secondary was one of the nation’s best in 2004, as the Bulldogs ranked third in the nation in pass efficiency defense while allowing just nine touchdown passes all season; the fifth-lowest total in the nation. The Bulldogs led the WAC in scoring defense, pass defense, turnover margin and total defense while playing in one of the highest producing offensive conferences in the nation.

In 2003, Stewart guided a much-improved Fresno State secondary that, by the end of the year, was one of the best in the WAC.  His unit recorded 16 interceptions, the third highest in the conference. Under Stewart, Fresno State ranked second in the WAC in 2003 in pass defense, allowing only 214.9 yards per game.

In total, he coached 13 players that have gone on to play professionally including: Marcus McCauley, Richard Marshall, James Sanders, Tyrone Culver, Cameron Worrell, Marquise Smith, Deltha O’Neal, Forey Duckett, Brock Marion, Desia Dunn, A. J. Jefferson, Therrian Fontenot and Nnamdi Asomugha.

An All-Conference cornerback at Moorpark (Calif.) Junior College, Stewart also played at Boise State, leading his team in interceptions as a senior.

Stewart and his wife, Pati, have three children, Carly, Jason and Taylor, and have four grandchildren, Chloe, Channing, Kadyn and Kendall, with a fifth expected in September.
