Entering his first year at EMU is Payton McCollum, who arrives Ypsilanti after spending the past two years at the University of Washington. McCollum currently serves as an offensive analyst for the EMU program.

At UW, he coached the Husky’s Quarterbacks. In 2020, Freshman quarterback Dylan Morris was named back-to-back Pac-12 Freshman of the Week following wins versus Arizona and Utah. Morris was also named second team All-Pac-12 by PFF and voted Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 by the coaches. The Huskies won the Pac-12 North Division. As an offensive unit, the Huskies averaged 3.36 points per drive (10th nationally, 1st in Pac-12), converted 48 percent of third downs (17th nationally), allowed 0.25 sacks per game (2nd nationally, 1st in Pac-12) and averaged just 0.75 turnover per game (8th nationally, 1st in Pac-12).

Prior to Washington, McCollum served as the Wide Receivers Coach at North Carolina Central University in 2019. Seven receivers started multiple games and caught 10+ passes while five receivers caught 20+ passes on the season and multiple touchdown passes.

McCollum spent the 2018 season as an analyst at the University of North Carolina where he assisted the offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator with putting together the weekly passing and third down game plans.

McCollum spent two seasons (2016-17) in the NFL as offensive coaching assistant with the Detroit Lions. He worked directly with the Wide Receivers Coach in all facets of game preparation and coaching. He also assisted head coach Jim Caldwell with day-to-day tasks and the offensive staff with film cut-ups, weekly film breakdown and the offensive playbook. In 2016, for the first time in franchise history and only the fifth time in NFL history, the Lions had five players each record 50-plus receptions, including receivers Golden Tate (91), Anquan Boldin (67) and Marvin Jones Jr. (55), as the Lions clinched a playoff berth that season. In 2017, the Lions were the only team in the NFL with two 1,000-yard receivers: Marvin Jones Jr. (1,101) and Golden Tate (1,003). Marvin Jones Jr. finished the season tied for 4th in the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 9 and the Lions offense averaged 25.6 Points Per Game (7th in the NFL). 2017 marked the first back-to-back winning seasons for the Lions in 22 years

Prior to Detroit, McCollum served as an offensive quality control coach at FCS Campbell University during the 2015 campaign, where he assisted with the development and coaching of the team’s quarterbacks and wide receivers. He was also tasked with recruiting the upstate region of South Carolina, and was responsible for all opponent film breakdown and creating the offensive playbook and scouting reports.

McCollum was also a volunteer assistant at Mount Tabor High School in 2013.

A native of Winston Salem, N.C., McCollum was a three-year letterman at Catawba College, where he graduated cum laude in 2013 with a degree in Economics and Finance.  Prior to starting coaching career, he worked for BB&T as a commercial credit analyst.
