    Running Backs

Howard Feggins, a former assistant football coach at Northwestern University, is entering his fourth season as an assistant football coach at Eastern Michigan University. He will coach the running backs.

Last year, the 42-year-old Feggins (5-6-65) oversaw an offense that averaged 276.2 yards per game. One of his wide receivers, Eric Deslauriers, finished 12th in the nation in receptions per game (6.17) and 26th in receiving yards per contest (74.83 ypg) en route to being named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

In 2004, EMU piled up the yardage using the spread offense , finishing 21st in the nation in total offense, rolling up an average of 427.91 yards per game. The Eagles were also 33rd in the Division I-A ranks in scoring offense at 29.82 points a game.

The Eagle offense had six games of 30 points or more, including a 61 point output in a four overtime victory over rival Central Michigan University. He saw Deslauriers and tailback Anthony Sherrell garner second team All-MAC honors. In addition, Deslauriers was fourth in the nation in receiving yards (114.27), fifth in receptions (7.64) and his 13 touchdowns set an EMU record for most touchdowns caught in a season. Quarterback Matt Bohnet was also sixth in the nation in total offense (293.7).

During his last four years at Northwestern, Feggins coached three all-Big Ten receivers Teddy Johnson, Sam Simmons and Kunle Patrick. Simmons is currently a member of the Miami Dolphins and Patrick tied the NCAA record with 47 straight games with a reception. The 2003 season marked the second straight year that three of Feggins’ receivers finished with 30 or more receptions.

Feggins joined the Northwestern staff after spending two seasons coaching the wide receivers at Miami under Walker. In his first season with the RedHawks, Feggins tutored All-MAC selection Jay Hall, who set a school single-season reception record.

Prior to being selected to the Miami post, Feggins spent two seasons as assistant coach in charge of defensive backs and kick returners at Wingate University (N.C.). He also oversaw the Bulldog’s speed development program. While at Wingate, Feggins coached third-team All-America defensive back Dorian Lane, the school’s first-ever defensive All-American.

A 1987 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Feggins was a four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels. A cornerback and strong safety, Feggins totaled 169 tackles during his career. As a sophomore, he ranked sixth on the team with 83 tackles. During Feggins’ junior year, the Tar Heels posted a 7-4-1 record and played in the Aloha Bowl.

Following his college graduation, Feggins played for the New England Patriots in 1988 and 1989 and during the preseason for the New York Giants in 1990. He played two seasons for the London Monarchs of the World Football League before closing out his career with the Hamilton TigerCats of the Canadian Football League.

Feggins and his wife, Renee (Dickerson) have two children, Jensen (10-29-96) and Kevin (4-21-93).
