Dick Flynn, the former head football coach at Central Michigan University, is starting his second year as the defensive ends coach at Eastern Michigan University.
Flynn has held numerous coaching jobs in intercollegiate football, including spending 22 years at Central Michigan University, the last six of those seasons as the head coach of the Chippewas.
During his six-year tenure as CMU’s head coach, Flynn led the 1994 team to a 9-3 record, a Mid-American Conference championship and a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl. For his accomplishments that season, he was named the MAC Coach of the Year. His record as a head coach was 30-37.
Prior to being named CMU’s head mentor, Flynn was the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for 16 seasons (1978-93) as well as serving as assistant head coach from 1991-93. While serving as the defensive coordinator, Central finished in the top 10 in the country in total defense eight times while 12 inside linebackers were named All-League and one was chosen as the MAC MVP. His 1990 defensive unit led the nation in scoring defense. The Chippewas also won MAC championships in 1979, 1980 and 1990.
Flynn (7-17-43) went on to be an assistant football coach at Indiana University for two seasons. He coached the linebackers in 2000 and was the recruiting coordinator and defensive ends coach in 2001. The 2001 squad had the second most improved defense in the nation. From Indiana, Flynn moved on to the University of Akron for two seasons, 2002 and 2003, where he coached the linebackers.
A native of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Flynn was an outstanding athlete at Mt. Pleasant High School. He earned three football letters as a football player at Michigan State University, and was the recipient of the Potsy Ross Award as the outstanding student-athlete on the MSU football squad in 1964 before completing his bachelor’s degree in 1965. He was an assistant football coach and baseball coach at Lansing Eastern H.S. in 1965-66 before spending four years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
After his service duty, Flynn returned to Lansing Eastern H.S. where he was the head football coach from 1971-77.
Flynn and his wife, Mary (Kluiber) have two adult daughters, Kelly and Katie along with five grandchildren.
