YPSILANTI, Mich. — Eastern Michigan University head baseball coach Jake Boss has announced a new hire for the 2008 staff. Mark Van Ameyde has joined the Eagles’ staff as a pitching coach after having spent the previous three season as an assistant on the Georgetown University baseball staff.
While an assistant at Georgetown, Van Ameyde guided the pitching rotation to numerous records, including most strikeouts in a season, fewest walks in a season and the lowest team earned run average in 23 years. In 2006, the Hoyas posted the most Big East Conference victories (8) since 1985. He also served as recruiting coordinator for the Hoya baseball program, responsible for recruiting trips and the annual Georgetown Baseball Camp.
Prior to joining Georgetown, Van Ameyde spent four seasons as the associate head coach at the University of Detroit-Mercy. As the hitting instructor, he led UDM to the top of the Horizon League in batting average. He also served as recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Titans baseball program. From 1998-2000, Van Ameyde served as head coach at St. Mary’s College where he was responsible for the implementation of the program, leading the team to the 2000 NSCAA World Series.
A native of Detroit, the 35-year-old (10/28/72) Van Ameyde started his college playing career at Henry Ford Community College, where he helped lead the team to its first regional championship in 1991. After two years at Henry Ford, he finished his career at UDM, posting a 12-7 record in two years and collecting All-Conference and Team MVP honors in 1994.
Van Ameyde graduated from Detroit-Mercy in 1996 with a degree in Communications and is currently finishing up his Masters in Sports Management from Wayne State University.
Van Ameyde and his wife, Melissa, live in Lake Orion with sons, Chase, Cole and Cash.
