Jerry Brown was named as a new assistant coach for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, head coach Jay Alexander announced, Oct. 1. Brown brings a wealth of coaching experience and energy to EMU. His main focus will be serving as the team's first base coach while also coach the catchers.
"I am extremely excited to add Jerry to our staff; he’s a perfect fit for us," noted Coach Alexander. "He brings tons of energy and knowledge for this position. We are extremely lucky to have him part of the EMU baseball family."
Coach "JB," 45, has been a head coach and assistant coach at the high school varsity level. Most recently he was an assistant at Birmingham Groves High School, focusing on hitting, catching, and defense. The Falcons batted over .300 as a team last year under his guidance.
The Detroit, Mich. native has spent the last six summers preparing young players to play ball at the collegiatelevel while coaching elite summer travel teams and training some of the area’s top talent. Some of the preparation that he has provided to these players include not only skills that can be used on the diamond, but also athletic conditioning and academic success.
After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems at Grand Valley State University in 1990, where he was also a four-year varsity athlete, Coach JB has also had a successful career as both a computer software professional and entrepreneur. He also holds a Master’s degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in Management Information Systems and currently manages corporate accounts for the Microsoft Corporation.
Coach JB is a lifetime volunteer participating in a variety of mentoring activities with organizations such as Oakland/Wayne County youth assistance, Junior Achievement, and the BDPA national computer competition. When he is not working, coaching, or volunteering, he spends time with his wife Sonya, son Malik, and daughter Candace in their current hometown of Bingham Farms, Mich.
