Eric Peterson enters his first season as an assistant baseball coach at Eastern Michigan University in 2014. Peterson, who comes to EMU after one year as the director of baseball operations at Kansas University as well as a head coaching stint with the Chillicothe Mudcats of the MINK Summer Collegiate League, will serve as the team's pitching coach.
Peterson brings six years of coaching experience to Ypsilanti. In August, Peterson began working as the Director of Baseball Operations at Kansas under head coach Ritch Price, whom Peterson played for a decade ago. Along with his job at KU, Peterson coached the Chillicothe Mudcats for two summers. Under Peterson's guidance, the Mudcats set a franchise record for wins and led the league in team ERA during the 2012 campaign.
Prior to making the return to Kansas, Peterson served as the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and assistant of game day administration at Niagara University from 2010-12.
Before his time coaching the Purple Eagles, Peterson coached the pitchers, coordinated recruiting and directed tournaments at Fort Scott Community College from 2008-10. While coaching at Fort Scott, he also worked for the Cleveland Indians as an associate scout.
Peterson's coaching career took flight in 2007 as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State University. He accepted the job of pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and head assistant of game day administration for the Gorillas. In addition to his graduate assistant duties at Pittsburg State, Peterson spent his 2007 summer as the top assistant, pitching coach and camp coordinator for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plains League.
As a player, Peterson began his collegiate career at Kansas, pitching two seasons for the Jayhawks. During the 2003 season, Peterson appeared in 12 games.
He continued his playing career at Pittsburg State, boasting a 1-0 record and a 3.10 ERA in 2005 before earning his bachelor's degree in sport administration in 2006. Two years later, Peterson completed his graduate coaching assistantship along with receiving a master's degree in sport administration.
As a native of Lawrence, Kan., Peterson played baseball at Free State High School, graduating in 2002. He currently resides in Ypsilanti with his son, Jack (4).
