Dan O’Brien is in his fifth season as a member of Jay Alexander’s staff, bringing a wealth of coaching and playing experience at the intercollegiate and professional level to EMU.
 
O’Brien, 57, was previously the head coach at Concordia University before spending 1991-1995 as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for the University of Michigan baseball team. During his tenure with the Wolverines, O’Brien was the hitting coach and in charge of infield and outfield play. The Wolverines led the Big Ten in hitting in 1993 and led the conference in fielding percentage in 1994.
 
The St. Petersburg, Fla. native also spent three seasons (1988-91) at Michigan State University as the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Spartan baseball team. The MSU pitching staff placed in the top-four in the Big Ten every season under O’Brien.
 
While completing his master’s degree in counseling from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 1982-83, O’Brien was the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Cougars, as the team advanced to the Division II World Series in 1983.
 
As a player, O’Brien was an All-American pitcher at Florida State in 1975 and an Academic All-American that same year. In 1973, he had the opportunity to play with team USA in the World Games, earning a gold medal. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1976 and played with the team in the big leagues in 1978 and ’79. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Florida State in 1976.
