The 2014 season marks the sixth season for Andrew Maki as a member of Jay Alexander's staff.

This season, Maki returns to a familiar role as the team's hitting coach after spending the last two seasons as EMU's pitching coach. Under his tutelage, EMU pitchers struck out 325 batters, led by ace Brian Hill who posted a 6-3 record, including one complete-game shutout against Western Michigan in which the senior starter took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning. The 2013 EMU pitching staff also allowed the fewest walks in the Mid-American Conference.

Maki took over as pitching coach in 2012 and helped the staff toss 389 strikeouts; the most in a single season in EMU history. Starting pitcher Steve Weber was drafted in the 33rd round (1007th) overall by the Miami Marlins after throwing three complete games (two shutouts) on the season including a 10-inning gem in the MAC Tournament against Miami. Maki also had three pitchers, Weber, Ryan Lavoie and Joe Battistelli, earn MAC West Pitcher of the Week nominations with Weber receiving the award twice.

The 2011 Eagles found success at the plate under Maki's guidance, leading the conference in six categories: batting average (.300), hits (571), on base percentage (.385), runs (353), RBI (321), doubles (120) and runs per game (6.5). In fact, the 120 doubles ranked as the 22nd-most nationally. Coach Maki helped produce three MAC Offensive Players of the Week, and Zack Leonard became the EMU All-Time Hits Leader during that season. The Green and White on 16 MAC games to go along with victories over No. 4 Clemson and No. 25 Kent State.

In 2010, Maki’s first recruiting class proved to make solid contributions in their first year at EMU, including Ben Magsig, who led the Eagles in batting average and on-base percentage. Bo Kinder also proved to be one of the team’s top players in his first season at EMU coming from Kaskaskia C.C., as he finished the 2010 season second on the team in home runs and slugging percentage. As a team, the Eagles hit 50 home runs in 2010, seven more than their opponents. The freshmen pitchers brought in by Maki and the EMU staff also had an outstanding year, as they combined for eight total wins and 10 saves. In his first season, Steve Weber garnered MAC West Pitcher of the Week honors after a 10-strikeout performance at Cleveland State, March 24.

In his first season as the hitting coach at EMU, Maki helped the Eagles hit 100 home runs as a team – the most by any EMU team in a single season in school history. Under Maki’s tutelage the 2009 Eagles finished the season averaging nearly seven runs per-game. In 15 games, EMU scored 10 or more runs, including a 27-run performance against Bowling Green, April 8, the most runs any EMU baseball team has ever scored against a Division I opponent.

Prior to joining the Eagles staff in 2009, Andrew Maki spent three years as the recruiting coordinator for Wayne State University and two years as hitting coach.  In 2008, WSU batted .311 with a .397 on base percentage.  He helped the 2007 Warriors raise their team batting average 36 points to .325, with an on base percentage of .414.  Prior to joining the Warrior staff, Maki served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for Henry Ford Community College.  He contributed to the teams’ remarkable 15-win improvement from the previous season.  The 2005 Hawks had a 3.90 ERA.

As a player, Maki earned all-league honors as a first baseman and pitcher for Henry Ford C.C. and finished his collegiate playing career at Grand Valley State University in 1999 and 2000.  He was a member of the 1999 Great Lakes Collegiate League Champion Michigan Monarchs that advanced to the World Championships in Australia.  Maki was also a three-time All-Catholic League and All-Downriver selection, and earned All-State honors in high school.

Maki is a 1996 graduate of Wyandotte Mt. Carmel High School and holds a bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University.
