The 15 total strikeouts are Eastern's third most in a single game since 1999
The 15 total strikeouts are Eastern's third most in a single game since 1999, led by seven from Landon Mueller (Fremont, Neb./Fremont/Omaha).
How it Happened
Miami seized momentum in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a three-run home run and a wild pitch to plate four runs and put Eastern Michigan in catch-up mode.
The Eagles answered in the second inning, stringing together doubles from Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) and Demir Heidelberg (Homewood, Ill./Homewood Flossmor), who each drove in a run to cut the deficit to 5-2. In the third, Nathan Borchardt (Stanley, N.C./East Lincoln/King) launched a solo homer, his second of the season, to pull EMU within two.
Mueller came to the mound in relief to start the bottom of the third inning, where he would remain for the next 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven. However, defensive miscues and timely Miami hits allowed the RedHawks to rebuild their lead, including a solo home run in the sixth and a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Eastern tacked on one run in the eighth inning, a John Hale (Ashland City, Tenn./Sycamore/Motlow State C.C.) pinch-hit RBI-single, but it was unable to overcome the deficit as the RedHawks completed the sweep with the 9-4 win.
Game Notes
» Eastern's record went to 4-12 (0-3 MAC) and Miami's improved to 11-4 (3-0 MAC).
» EMU outhit its opponent for the third time this season. After outhitting the RedHawks, 9-7, in Saturday's game, EMU has outhit its foe in consecutive games for the first time this season.
» Eastern pitching struck out a season-high 15 opposing batters, the second most in one game by a MAC team this season.
» Eastern's six extra-base hits (four doubles, one triple, one home run) marked a season high.
» Demir Heidelberg extended his hitting streak to three-consecutive games with an RBI double off the wall in the second inning, driving in his first collegiate run.
» Nathan Borchardt homered for the second time this season with a solo shot to right field in the third inning. His two home runs tie for the second most on the team as he elevated his RBI total to eight, the third most of any Eagle. He extended both his hitting streak and his reach base streak to four consecutive games, both of which are the longest on the team at the moment.
» Nick Weaver recorded his second multi-hit game of the year with a pair of doubles. The outing marked his first of the season with multiple extra-base hits as he is up to three on the season after homering in the first game of the series, March 6. Weaver drove in Heidelberg off his first two-bagger in the second inning for his third RBI of the year and second in the past three games.
» Landon Mueller had another productive outing out of the bullpen, allowing just one earned run off three hits while striking out seven and walking one opposing batter. His seven strikeouts are the most he's had this season and the second most from any individual Eagle in one game.
» TJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Racine Horlick/Kansas) tripled for the second time in the series. His two triples tie for second in the MAC. He went 2-for-3 on the day for his team-high fourth multi-hit game of 2026.
» John Hale notched his eighth hit and RBI of the season, singling up the middle as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
» Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) secured his fourth game with multiple hits this season. He paces the team with 15 hits.
Historical Notes
» Eastern and Miami met for the 139th time. The Eagles hold a 65-74 all-time record against the RedHawks and a 6-24 mark in Oxford since 1999.
» Eastern's 15 strikeouts rank third in program history in single-game standings since 1999.
