CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – For nearly four decades, one voice quietly shaped the story of Eastern Michigan University Athletics. Now, the Mid-American Conference will recognize the man who spent his career telling those stories.

Longtime Eastern Michigan sports information director Jim Streeter has been selected to the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame as part of the league's 2026 induction class, the conference office announced Friday, March 13. Streeter will be formally inducted Thursday, May 28, during the MAC Honors Dinner at the Hotel Cleveland.

"What a wonderful honor for me to be selected to the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2026," said Streeter. "I want to thank the many administrators, coaches, student-athletes, and my personal staff over the years for making my job so fulfilling. A special thank you to current EMU Senior Associate Athletics Director Greg Steiner, who helped elevate our Media Relations Department to great heights as my student assistant, graduate assistant, and full-time assistant. In my 39 years at EMU, there were challenges, and without the love and support of my family: wife Mary and sons, Andrew, Michael, and David, their wives, Stephanie, Erin, and Katherine, and grandchildren Isabel, Annaliese, and Avery, this honor would not be possible."

A legendary figure in Eastern Michigan athletics history, Streeter becomes the 12th representative from EMU to join the prestigious MAC Hall of Fame. He joins a distinguished group that includes Charlie Batch (Football, 2018), Ben Braun (Men's Basketball, 2025), Hasely Crawford (Track & Field, 1991), Ron Johnson (Football, 1988), Mike Jones (Men's Swimming & Diving, 2016), Gordon Minty (Track & Field, 1994), Lucy Parker (Administrator, 2022), Ron Oestrike (Baseball, 2017), Bob Owchinko (Baseball, 1992), Bob Parks (Men's Cross Country and Track & Field, 2015), and Bob Welch (Baseball, 1990).

"We are proud to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our former student-athletes, coaches and administrators, while recognizing the extraordinary achievements of these six individuals during their time in the Mid-American Conference," said MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher. "Welcoming this year's class into the MAC Hall of Fame is a privilege for our Conference."

Streeter will be recognized alongside five other inductees: Tom Borelli (Central Michigan - Wrestling), Dave Jamerson (Ohio - Men's Basketball), Rhonda King-Randolph (Toledo - Softball), Bill Richards (Ball State - Men's Tennis), and Jason Taylor (Akron - Football).

"The MAC Hall of Fame honors the legacy of those who have demonstrated excellence in competition and made lasting contributions to the success of the Mid-American Conference," Steinbrecher added.

The MAC Hall of Fame was approved by the MAC Council of Presidents in 1987. The charter class was inducted in 1988 and subsequent classes were added in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994.  After six induction classes, the MAC Hall of Fame maintained 52 members until it was reinstated in May of 2012. This year's class brings the number of MAC Hall of Fame inductees to 136 individuals from 20 classes.

Streeter's career reflects a lifetime commitment to Eastern Michigan and to the profession of athletics communications. A 1973 graduate of EMU, he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with minors in journalism and history. While still a student, Streeter combined those passions as sports editor of The Eastern Echo, serving two years and establishing the attention to accuracy and storytelling that would define his career.

After graduation, Streeter sharpened his reporting skills as a sports writer at The Ypsilanti Press before returning to his alma mater in 1974 as assistant sports information director. One year later, he was promoted to sports information director, a role he would hold for 37 years.

Over the course of a 39-year career in EMU's Athletic Media Relations Office, Streeter oversaw communications for 21 varsity sports and became a central figure in the department's growth and national visibility. His responsibilities ranged from managing media relations and producing publications to coordinating game operations and preserving the program's historical records.

While Streeter preferred to keep the spotlight on the student-athletes and coaches he represented, he witnessed and documented some of the most celebrated moments in Eastern Michigan athletics history.

He coordinated publicity for the 1987 football team that captured the program's lone Mid-American Conference championship and earned a victory in the California Bowl. Streeter also worked closely with the men's basketball program during four MAC regular-season and tournament championship runs, including the Eagles' historic 1991 "Sweet 16" appearance and the program's memorable upset of Duke in the 1996 NCAA Tournament. He was also there for EMU baseball's run to Omaha in 1975 and 1976 for a pair of NCAA College World Series appearances.

Across all sports, Eastern Michigan teams captured 122 of the school's 159 MAC championships during Streeter's tenure. He also helped promote 15 NCAA individual national champions in track and field and cross country.

Beyond campus, Streeter played an active role within the profession. A longtime member of the College Sports Communicators (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America), he served four years on the organization's publications committee. He also served on the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association as vice president and secretary from 1990-94. In 2007, the group honored him with its "Best of the Best" award.

Streeter's reputation for professionalism extended to some of the largest sporting events. He served as one of nine media marshals for the 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills Country Club and later worked on the media relations staff for the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Regional and the 2009 NCAA Final Four in Detroit.

In 2004, Eastern Michigan recognized Streeter's contributions with induction into the EMU Athletics Hall of Fame. When he retired in 2012, he held the distinction of being the longest tenured Division I sports information director in the state of Michigan.

Three years later, the university permanently honored his impact by dedicating the Jim Streeter Media Relations Office inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. Streeter also received an honorary EMU varsity letter and the university's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2013.

Yet his legacy extends beyond statistics, championships, or honors.

Generations of young professionals entered the field under Streeter's mentorship. Former students, graduate assistants, and assistant sports information directors who worked alongside him now lead communications offices across the country. Many credit Streeter for shaping both their careers and their approach to the profession.

A native of Albion, Mich., Streeter graduated from Albion High School in 1966, where he earned varsity letters in baseball and basketball.

Today, he remains closely connected to the university he served for so many years. Streeter continues to attend Eastern Michigan events and remains active on the E-Club Board.

He and his wife, Mary, live in Ypsilanti. They have three sons, Andrew, and twins Michael and David, along with three grandchildren.
