YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – SASS worked with Eastern Michigan University Credit Union (EMUCU) to host a Financial Fitness for College Students seminar in McKenny Hall, Tuesday, Feb. 24.
The seminar gave student athletes a hands-on opportunity to learn financial skills that will help them beyond their college years. The students learned basic financial skills, along with how to apply them to their lives now and in the future.
Grace Rochester, a graduate assistant for SASS who helped organize the event, touches on the motivation for putting on the seminar: "With the rise of NIL, we want to give our athletes all the tools needed to be as successful as they can."
The session, held in McKenny Hall Room 348, included nine student-athletes and focused on practical topics such as budgeting, saving, credit use, and long-term financial planning. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and discuss real-life scenarios to better understand how financial decisions today can impact their futures.
One attendee reflected on the experience, saying, "The seminar was great, and I learned a lot about how to be better financially fit," highlighting the immediate value of the program for those in attendance.
SASS and EMUCU previously held a Financial Fitness Money Matters Seminar in the fall semester, Oct. 6, where track and field seniors learned about budgeting, saving and investing, credit cards, and more.
SASS plans to continue their partnership with EMUCU to educate student athletes on the world of finance. Contact for the program is Grace Rochester, who can be reached at crochest@emich.edu.
