CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan women's basketball junior Fernanda Ovalle was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Ovalle (Santiago, Chile/Montverde Academy/Xavier) posted the second double-double of her NCAA career, scoring a career-high 26 points with a season-high 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal, leading the Eagles to an 86-76 victory against Bowling Green, on Dec. 30, snapping the Falcons' seven-game win streak.
Ovalle's 26.0 points per game average was the highest in the MAC last week, while her 2.00 blocks per game ranked second, and her 10.0 rebounds per game slotted third. She was efficient offensively against the Falcons, shooting 47.1% (8-for-17) from the field and 88.9% (8-for-9) from the free-throw line, the fifth-best mark in the conference. Individually, Ovalle went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line and played 38 minutes, all of which are career-highs.
The honor marks the first player of the week award of Ovalle's career, as she previously earned Big East Freshman of the Week recognition with the Xavier Musketeers, on Nov. 28, 2022.
The Eagles' are up to three player of the week awards this season, as Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) previously garnered the award twice, on Dec. 2, and Dec. 16.
