Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader at Ferris State for 3-0 Start

Eagles claimed their third consecutive doubleheader sweep of FSU in as many years

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team swept a road doubleheader at Ferris State University Monday, Jan. 19, as the Eagles downed the Bulldogs by scores of 6-1 and 4-1 inside the Racquet & Tennis Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The Eagles, who opened the year at 3-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season, were 5-0 in doubles matches and 8-2 in singles play with the Bulldogs (1-2).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern opened the first dual of the day by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The team of Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) combined for a 6-2 win at No. 2 before Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) and Regina Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) combined for a 6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. The duo of Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) also were victorious at No. 1 with a 7-5 score.
 
In singles, the Eagles opened a 2-0 lead as Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 before Tolstova bolstered the lead to 3-0 with her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. Pehal Kharadkar (Indore, India/Daly College Indore) followed with the clinching team point as she captured a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 4. With the team win secured, the remaining matches were played out with the hosts taking their lone point with a victory at No. 1. The final two matches went to the Eagles as Mendez Carreño won, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(5) at No. 5 before Parreira secured a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
 
Following a break, the teams returned to the court for the back half of the doubleheader with the Eagles again winning the doubles point. The team of Diaz Zayas and Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya got the ball rolling with their 6-4 win at No. 2 before the duo of Parreira and Tolstova scored a 7-5 win at No. 1 to clinch the point.
 
Eastern took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 4 singles as Parreira capped a perfect day with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4. After Ferris State scored a win at No. 1 to cut the score to 2-1, the Eagles bounced back with wins in the final two matches of the day with Tolstova taking a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 before Kharadkar clinched the team win for the second time, this time by winning, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 3.
 
NOTING SINGLES PLAY
» The team's rookies were a perfect 7-0 in singles play with Sabrina Tolstova, Pehal Kharadkar, and Matilde Parreira each posting 2-0 records while Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya won her lone match, a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 Tolstova rolled to wins of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 before taking a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 4 while Parreira captured wins of 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 before winning, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5.
» Pehal Kharadkar was not only victorious in both of her singles matches, she also posted the team's clinching point in the dual. She opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 in EMU's 6-1 win before adding a 7-5, 6-1 decision at No. 3 to clinch the second dual at 4-1.
» On the day, the Eagles were 8-2 in singles action with a 5-1 mark in the opening dual and a 3-1 record in the second.
 
NOTING DOUBLES PLAY
» Eastern was perfect on the day in doubles as it secured both doubles points by winning all three matches in the first dual and the only two finished matches in the second. The Eagles have won the doubles point in all three duals played this season.
» Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova swept both doubles matches to remain undefeated in spring action. The duo won, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot before claiming a 7-5 at the No. 1 spot.
» Lara Diaz Zayas and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya captured their first two wins of the spring season with a sweep of the day. They opened with a 7-5 win at No. 1 before capping the day with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.
» Iva Daneva and Regina Mendez Carreño won the final doubles match of the day as they secured a victory at No. 3 in the first dual, 6-3, a win that clinched the point for the Eagles.
 
NOTING THE TEAM
» With the sweep, the Eagles improved to 3-0 while the Bulldogs fell to 1-2.
» The Eagles improved to 9-0 all-time against Ferris State and have swept doubleheaders from the Bulldogs in each of the past three seasons. Eastern took wins of 6-1 and 5-0 at home in 2024 before claiming wins of 7-0 and 4-0 at home last year.
» Eastern improved to 105-114 all-time against fellow Michigan schools and improved to 38-68 on the road in those matches.
» The Eagles played their 58th same-day doubleheader in program history and posted their 28th all-time sweep. Additionally, EMU is now 82-34 in those matches and 27-22 when playing the matches on the road. All told, Eastern is 38-20 in the opening match of the doubleheader and 44-14 in the second match.
» Eastern opened its season with a 3-0 record for just the seventh time in program history and the first since the 2002-03 team opened with a 6-0 mark. The other EMU teams to open with at least consecutive wins include 2002-03 (6-0), 2000-01 (3-0), 1983-84 (6-0), 1982-83 (4-0), 1981-82 (4-0), and 1977-78 (3-0).
» Dating back to last season, Eastern has now won six consecutive matches. The Eagles scored wins of 5-2 at home against Northern Illinois (April 11, 2025), 5-2 at home against Bowling Green (April 18, 2025), and 4-3 at Ball State (April 18, 2025) before this season's three consecutive wins. The last time the Eagles won at least six consecutive matches came during the 2017-18 season when they captured nine in a row after starting the season 2-3.

The Eagles return to action later this week when they travel to Youngstown, Ohio, to face the Penguins of Youngstown State University Friday, Jan. 23, in an 11 a.m. dual.
