Each student-athlete ranks highly in the conference standings in a multitude of categories

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athletes Drew Beckner and Logan Hugo were named All-Mid-American Conference Second Team as the conference announced its 2025 all-conference honors Tuesday, May 20.

Both student-athletes rank highly in the conference standings in a multitude of categories as the accolades mark the first for both Beckner (Westerville, Ohio/Big Walnut/Charleston) and Hugo's (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) careers, and serve as the 19th-consecutive season Eastern has seen at least one Eagle earn an all-conference nod.

Significantly improved entering his second NCAA Division I season, Beckner proved to be productive on the mound as the Eagles' Friday starter. Through 14 starts (73.1 IP - fourth most in the MAC), he has struck out 75 batters (third in the MAC) while walking just 35, has allowed 45 earned runs, 51 total runs, held opposing batters to a .270 average, and given up 79 hits. With a 3-2 record on the year, his three wins are tied for the sixth-most in the conference. Expected to make a minimum of one more start this season, Beckner has set NCAA Division I career-best marks as a starter in innings pitched (73.1), strikeouts (75), walks (fewest - 35), ERA (5.52), and WHIP (1.55).

Beckner earned one weekly conference honor as he was named MAC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career, April 14. He pitched a gem in his start against the University of Toledo Rockets, April 11. Beckner tied his previous career high with eight strikeouts for the third time this season and second consecutive game as he didn't allow an earned run, pitched 6.2 innings, and held opposing batters to a .174 average. His eight strikeouts ranked as the fourth-most in a game in the MAC and the most strikeouts from a single pitcher from April 11-13. Beckner also held strong with runners on base, limiting his opposition to a .200 clip (2-for-10). Furthermore, the zero earned run start marked the first of Beckner's NCAA Division I career.

In the team standings, Beckner paced the Green and White starters in a multitude of categories, including ERA, opposing batting average, innings pitched, games started, runs allowed, earned runs allowed, and triples allowed. He found his rhythm April 4-17, recording at least eight strikeouts in three consecutive outings, becoming the first EMU pitcher to do so since Sam Delaplane (10, 8, 12) in the 2017 season, March 31-April 14. Beckner struck out eight in his start against Ball State University, April 4, eight against Toledo, April 11, and 10 at the University at Albany, April 17, for a total of 26 punchouts.

A nearly everyday player since his sophomore season, Hugo found consistency at the plate this season, producing career highs nearly across the board as he is currently posting career figures in batting average (.320), slugging (.584), on-base (.427), and OPS (1.011). He has seen significant spikes in slugging percentage (up .81), on-base (up .73), batting average (up .36), RBI (58 – career best by 18), and walks (13 – career best by 12). His 12 doubles, 63 hits, 52 runs, and 12 home runs also mark career highs.

He thrived situationally as well, posting a .379 average with runners in scoring position, .380 with two outs, a .548 clip in advancement opportunities, and a .619 figure with a runner on third and less than two outs.

In the conference rankings, Hugo ended the season with the fourth-most RBI and stolen bases, sixth-most walks, as well as the ninth-most runs and home runs, he also ranked inside the conference top-20 in slugging and OPS.

In team standings, he led Eastern in walks, runs, RBI, triples (two), home runs, total bases (115), stolen bases, and at-bats (197).

He has climbed the program leaderboards this season, as he has brought his career home runs total to 32, tying him Mitchell McGeein (2013-16) for the fifth-most in program history, while also ranking in the top-10 in RBI (eighth - 134) and runs (ninth - 146).

The 6-foot-2 outfielder had a career day in the 19-12 win over Miami University, March 22. Hugo went 5-for-6 from the plate with two home runs, two doubles, six RBI, and three runs. His five hits, two home runs, and six RBI all marked career highs. The five hits and 13 total bases stand as the most from an individual in the MAC this season while his two home runs stand as the second-most, and six RBI rank as the fourth-most in the conference.

The All-MAC honor is not his only first of the season as he was named MAC Player of the Week for the first time in his career, Feb. 25. In 13 at-bats, Hugo batted .538 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and 1.600 OPS. He notched seven hits, four of which went for extra bases (three doubles, one homer), while driving in seven runs, and totaling a MAC single-game high 13 bases. The Essexville, Mich., native also worked one walk and one hit by pitch while going strikeout free for the week.

Together, Beckner and Hugo's respective accolades bring EMU's all-time All-MAC honors total to 121 and mark the 57th and 58th respective second-team nod as they became the 53rd and 54th different Eagles to earn it.
