Eastern unable to down in-state foe on the road
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road at Michigan State University, Feb. 2, inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Center in East Lansing, Mich. The Eagles (2-4) fell as the Spartans (4-2) won the doubles point before taking three singles matches as the teams were playing to clinch.
"It was a tough day for the team," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "We competed well with good energy and spirit, but the tennis wasn't there. We didn't execute in the mid-court well enough and that got us beat on several courts. We will regroup, get back to training, and use these lessons to keep getting better."
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 while leading at No. 2 as well. The hosts followed up with singles victories at No. 5 and No. 4 before the win at No. 3 clinched the dual. Of the three unfinished matches, Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) at No. 1 and Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) at No. 6 has both dropped their first sets but were leading in the second when the dual was called as the Spartans has secured the required four points for the team win.
