Hazmukova has a hand in clinching doubles and team points to snap four-match skid
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returned to the win column thanks to the gritty play of freshman Viki Hazmukova, who had a hand in clinching both the doubles and team points in a 4-3 win over Cleveland State University, Feb. 14, inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio. With the win, the Eagles (3-4) snapped a four-match losing skid overall while the Vikings fell to 3-5 on the year.
"I'm so proud of this team," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "We made our energy and togetherness a priority and it paid off today. Everyone fought for each other from the first ball to last and the energy from our bench was instrumental. Cleveland State is an excellent program, and they deserve a ton of credit; they were incredibly tough and made us earn everything. This was a true team win, but Viki Hazmukova deserves a special mention for the gritty clinch on her birthday! We're excited to keep growing from this and take the momentum into Sunday."
The Eagles captured the doubles point for the fifth time in seven duals this season with Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) winning, 6-4, at No. 2 before Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) and Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) won, 6-2, at No. 3 to clinch the point. The win by Brichackova and Hazmukova marked the first time this season the No. 3 doubles team has clinched the point for the Eagles while Hazmukova has been part of all five clinching points in 2025.
With a 1-0 lead, the teams headed into singles where Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) won at No. 3 via retirement and Vichare made it 3-0 for the visitors with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. The Vikings scored their first point with a three-set win at No. 6 before Hazmukova won at No. 2, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5, to clinch the dual for the Eagles for the second time this season. The Vikings won the final two matches at No. 1 and No. 5 for the 4-3 final score.
