YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team forced a season-high-tying 16 turnovers and posted their third-lowest total in Mid-American Conference action, but it was not enough as the University of Toledo grabbed a 77-49 decision inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, Feb. 1, in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (1-19, 0-10 MAC), who celebrated Alumni Weekend, National Women and Girls in Sports Day, and participated in the Play4Kay game, saw Sisi Eleko tally her 11th double-double of the year in the game with the Rockets (15-5, 7-3 MAC).

How It Happened
Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) drove to the hoop twice for tough layups in the early going as the Eagles trailed, 14-6, at the first media time out as the Rockets had made their last six field goals in a row to open their lead. Following the break, Olivia Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side), who had two points, scored seven more points to finish the stanza with nine while Eleko had a game-high four rebounds as Toledo held a 20-13 lead.

The visitors built on their lead as they opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run. The Eagles pushed back as they went on a 9-6 run to close the stanza with Smith adding four more points to bring her total to 13 in the game, which would be more than 13 of her games played previously this year. At the break, the Rockets held a 10-point advantage, 34-24.

The Eagles cut into their deficit at the media time out as they trailed by eight (41-33) as Eleko scored six of the team's nine points in the early going while adding five rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season, which, at the time, saw her with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Toledo closed the quarter making four of its last five shots for a 14-6 run that built their lead to 55-39 at the end of the third.

Toledo opened the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run as the Eagles were 0-of-4 from the field and committed seven turnovers while the visitors shot 5-of-7 from the floor. Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) drove to the hoop and scored the follow-up free throw after the foul to end the run, but the Rockets would outscore the Eagles, 10-6, the rest of the way to take the 77-49 win.

Game Notes
» Sisi Eleko notched her 11th double-double of the season as she finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The MAC leader in double-doubles and rebounds, Eleko recorded 12+ boards for the seventh time this season and the 12th time in her career while adding two steals and two assists.
» With her double-double, Sisi Eleko has scored at least 10 points in 19-of-20 games played this year and tallied at least 15 points in her 16th contest. Additionally, she has recorded at least 15 points and 12 rebounds in the same game seven times.
» Olivia Smith continued her scoring ways as she tallied 14 points, including 13 in the first half of play to mark back-to-back games in which she has reached double figures by halftime after scoring 11 at Kent State (Jan. 29). She finished the game with a team-high three assists as well.
» In the past two games, Olivia Smith has scored a combined 30 points (16 at Kent State and 14 against Toledo) to mark the fifth time in her career she has accomplished the feat and the first time this year. The last time she scored a total of at least 30 points in two games came early last season when she reached 31 points with 10 at North Dakota State (Dec. 1, 2023) and 21 at North Dakota (Dec. 3, 2023). Her career best of 33 points over a two-game span came in her freshman season when she notched 15 against Hillsdale (Dec. 28, 2022) and 18 against Miami (Jan. 4, 2023) repeating the tally with 15 at Bowling Green (Jan. 7, 2023).
» Olivia Westphal scored one three-pointer against Toledo to bring her current streak to nine consecutive games with at least one triple, which ties her longest streak of the season after opening the year with at least one make in the first nine games she played. While she saw her streak of five games with multiple three-pointers end, she did move closer to reaching 50 triples on the year as she has made 49.
» Although the Rockets won the rebounding battle (36-29), the Eagles held the advantage on the offensive glass with 12 compared to Toledo's five. The Eagles, who were led by Sisi Eleko's five offensive boards with Brooklyn Thrash and Kyndal Lewis (Belton, Mo./Belton) each adding two, have tallied at least 10 offensive rebounds in 15-of-20 games this year while their opponents have done so just 10 times.
» The Eagles finished 3-of-20 from behind the arc to extend their current streak to 123 consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer. Olivia Westphal kept the streak going with her make at 1:59 remaining in the second quarter. The last EMU failed to drain a long-distance shot came Nov. 29, 2020, when Eastern finished 0-of-15 from three-point range at home against UIC.
