Eagles move to 1-1 in MAC play after topping Minutemen in first meeting as conference foes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team prevailed against the University of Massachusetts, 80-74, Tuesday, Dec. 30, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
 
Carlos Hart (Miami, Fla./North Miami/Valdosta State) led the Eagles in scoring with 23 points, earning a double-double with 12 rebounds to go in hand. Addison Patterson's (Mississauga, Ontario/Bella Vista College Prep/ Northwestern State) 14 points and 11 rebounds also earned himself a double-double.
 
Mohammad Habhab (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn/Central Michigan) added 20 points and nine rebounds and Jon Sanders II (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Christian/Northwestern State) added 12 points via two triples.
 
How It Happened
Eastern got off to a hot start, going up 9-2 after holding UMass to 0-of-8 from the field through the first five minutes. 
 
The Minutemen closed the gap midway through the first half, taking their first lead of the game 21-20 with four free throws just under eight minutes left. 
 
After a late surge from UMass put them up 35-31 with around two minutes left, Eastern couldn't close the gap and went into halftime down 41-38. 
 
The second half began with each team trading baskets, the biggest lead being five between both squads. Eastern took the lead back with just over ten minutes left with a two-point jumper from Hart.
 
After jumping to a six-point lead with less than two minutes left in the game, the Eagles held on to force UMass to foul for possession and win 80-74.
 
Game Notes
» Eastern moves to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the MAC while UMass moves to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
» Eastern was 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the field and 3-of-12 (25.0%) from the three-point line, while UMass was 28-of-70 (40.0%) from the floor and 6-of-25 (24.0%) from three-point range.
» Mohammad Habhab netted 20 points, his 12th game in double digits this season.
» Mohammad Habhab's 20 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three blocks represent the first performance in the nation with that stat line or better.
» Mohammad Habhab's 13 points in the first half is a NCAA career-high, a far cry from his 5.6 ppg in first halves this season. 
» Mohammad Habhab earned career-highs in free throws made (8) and blocks (3).
» Carlos Hart scored 73 points over the last three games, it took eight games prior for him to reach 73 points. 
» Addison Patterson earned his first double-double as an Eagle with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and seventh in his collegiate career.
» Carlos Hart earned his first double-double as an Eagle with 23 points and 12 rebounds, and 16th in his collegiate career.
» With Addison Patterson and Carlos Hart double-doubles tonight, they're the first two Eagles with double-doubles in a game since Dec. 11, 2021 versus FIU, with Monty Scott and Mo Njie. The last game not in overtime with two Eagles registering double-doubles was January 16, 2021 at Central Michigan, with Yeikson Montero and Miles Gibson registering double-doubles. 
» Carlos Hart's 12 rebounds is a career-high.
» Eastern's eight blocks is the most since at Central Michigan, March 8, 2024.
» Eastern's 27 free throws made is the most since 28 at NIU, Feb. 22, 2025.
» Eastern holding UMass to 6-of-25 beyond the arc is the first time the Eagles held an opponent to six or less three pointers on 25+ attempts since playing Miami, Feb. 18, 2025.
