Mendez Carreno led the way for Eastern with a pair of singles victories over the weekend
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Four members of the Eastern Michigan University tennis team competed at the 2025 Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Oct. 10-12, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., with senior Regina Mendez Carreño leading the way with a 2-1 record in singles play for the Eagles. Three freshmen teammates also competed in the event that featured one singles and one doubles match for each entrant each day.
In singles action, Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) posted a 2-1 record on the weekend as she bounced back from a first-day loss to post back-to-back wins. On Saturday, the senior Eagle dropped the first set before roaring back for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Eline Bex (Iowa). She followed that with a straight-set win over Megan Basil (Ohio State), 6-2, 6-3.
Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) was the lone freshman to secure a singles win on the weekend as she handed Sally Xu (Iowa) a 6-2, 6-4 loss on Saturday. Both Pehal Kharadkar (Indore, India/Daly College Indore) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) competed in three matches over the weekend as well but were unable to grab a victory.
In doubles, Parreira and Tolstova paired together once again and recorded a 1-2 record. On the opening day, the EMU duo nearly grabbed a win as they dropped a 7-6 decision to the Iowa tandem of Pia Kranholdt and Xu. On the final day, the EMU team found its footing and handed the OSU team of Basil and Hephzibah Oluwadare a 6-2 defeat. Kharadkar and Mendez Carreno also played three matches together over the weekend.
Several Eagles will return to action this week when they head to Urbana, Ill., to compete in the 2025 ITA Midwest Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Illinois, Oct. 16-19, at the Atkins Tennis Center. The tournament will feature qualifying and main draw singles play and main draw doubles play with 23 institutions sending athletes to compete. The event will be used to determine who advances to the NCAA Championships in November as the finalists in singles and the winners of the doubles tournament will earn automatic berths into the national event.
