Tennis Faces Top Foes at Michigan Invitational

Four Eagles opened the 2025 spring slate facing tough competition in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Four members of the Eastern Michigan University tennis program opened the 2025 spring schedule by facing some tough competition at the 2025 University of Michigan Invitational, Jan. 10-12, with the Eagles playing against several nationally ranked individuals. The Eagles took the court against competitors from No. 8 Michigan, No. 15 Ohio State University, and Texas Tech University one week ahead of opening dual play.
"This weekend was a great opportunity for our program and I'm so proud of how the ladies represented us," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "Playing three nationally-contending sets of opponents was a great experience for us and each of our players had big moments and breakthroughs. We improved as we went and learned a lot from the matches. This will be great for us heading forward into our first home match next weekend."
Although the Eagles were unable to secure a victory, they did gain valuable experience heading into the dual season, including Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon), a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection, who faced a pair of nationally-ranked singles players and one nationally ranked doubles team while playing with partner Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State). In singles play, Shved fell to No. 18 Piper Charney (Michigan), 6-2, 6-3, before dropping a three-set battle to No. 84 Sydni Ratliff (Ohio State), 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. She closed the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Mariia Hlahola (Texas Tech). In doubles action, Shved and Komar faced No. 57 Hlahola and Hailey Murphy (TTU) and fell, 6-2, on the first day of the event.
Freshman Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macadonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) played her first nationally ranked foe in No. 40 Lily Jones (UM), falling 6-0, 6-2. Daneva nearly bounced back with a win over Teah Chavez (OSU) before falling, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1. Fellow rookie Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) played three tough foes as well and nearly claimed a win over Elena Daskalova (TTU), but fell in the third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7).
Daneva and Hazmukova teamed to play three doubles matches and opened the weekend facing No. 33 Andreea Lily and Jermine Sherif (TTU), falling to the nationally-ranked Red Raider duo, 6-1.

The Eagles will open their 2025 spring dual season Saturday, Jan. 18, with a home doubleheader against Ferris State University inside the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. The first match between the Eagles and the Bulldogs will start at 3:30 p.m. with the second starting at approximately 7 p.m.
