Eagles went undefeated on the day with wins of 7-0 and 4-0

Highlights

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opened its 2025 dual season in convincing fashion as the Eagles swept a pair of duals from visiting Ferris State University, Jan. 18, inside the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (2-0) won the opening match, 7-0, before winning the second, 4-0, as the teams played to clinch.

"[It was] such a great way to start the season," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "Our play for both doubles points were fantastic, especially in the second dual where we were aggressive and dominating the middle of the court. Sabina and Prerna were especially dominant at No. 1 doubles. In singles, we followed that up with a lot of discipline and focus. A lot of mental and physical intensity is required to compete at the level we want to play and this was a great opportunity to exercise that. I also am proud of our freshmen, Viki and Lara, for earning their first career clinches! I'm excited for us to learn from these matches and continue to grow together!"

How It Happened
Eastern opened the day with a 7-0 victory as the Eagles won all six singles matches and the two doubles matches that were completed. In doubles play, Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics), the runners-up at the 2024 Mid-American Conference Fall Individuals, won their No. 1 doubles bout, 6-1, before Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) followed at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.

The Eagles then swept through the singles matches with all six winning in straight sets. Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) got things started with her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 before Vichare grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. The dual was clinched at No. 2 with Hazmukova claiming a 6-1, 7-5 victory. With the team win assured, Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3, before Komar won at No. 4 with a 7-6(5), 6-0 decision. The final match went to Brichackova with her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3.

Following a break, the teams returned to the court and the Eagles picked up were they left off as Brichackova and Prerna won, 6-0, at No. 1 before Hazmukova and Komar took the win at No. 2, 6-2. In singles play, Vichare was first to finish with her 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 before Hazmukova won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2. The final win came at No. 5 with Diaz Zayas claiming a 6-0, 7-6(4) win.

Match Notes
» Freshman Viki Hazmukova and senior Prerna Vichare were both 4-0 on the day as both won their two singles matches and both doubles matches. Both players were 1-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles with Vichare going 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with Sabina Brichackova while Hazmukova combined with Marta Komar to go 2-0 at No. 2 doubles.
» Viki Hazmukova helped earn the clinching point in 3-of-4 areas on the day. Hazumkova and Marta Komar won their matches at No. 2 doubles in both duals to clinch the doubles point twice with Hazmukova's win at No. 2 singles in the opening dual clinching the fourth point for the Eagles as well.
» Freshman Lara Diaz Zayas also went 2-0 in singles play with both of her wins coming at the No. 5 position. Her win in the second dual clinched the 4-0 victory for the Eagles.
» Sabina Brichackova won twice at No. 1 doubles with Prerna Vichare to help both move up the doubles win ladder at Eastern. Brichackova has now won 52 doubles matches, which leaves her five from reaching the program's top 20 list while Vichare's 51 wins are just one behind.

Historical Notes
» Eastern moved to 2-0 overall with the wins. The matches served as exhibition matches for Ferris State and will not count toward their record for the season.
» The Eagles moved to 7-0 all-time against Ferris State and have swept back-to-back doubleheaders after winning 6-1 and 5-0 last year in Ypsilanti.
» Eastern is now 101-111 all-time against fellow Michigan schools after winning both duals against the Bulldogs.
» The Eagles improved to 169-96 all-time in duals ending in a sweep and 66-15 when those matches are played at home.
» With the 7-0 win to open the day, the Eagles improved to 24-24 all-time in their first dual of the season while snapping a three-match skid in such contests. EMU is now 13-2 when those openers are played at home. Additionally, the Eagles improved to 30-17 in their home opener and have won three consecutive home openers.
