Volleyball Completes Competition at EMU Tournament

– The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in matches against Marshall University, 3-2, and Oakland University, 3-0, respectively, as the Eagles concluded play at the EMU Tournament inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center Friday, Sept. 7.  
 
How it Happened – vs. Marshall
SET 1 | Eastern started its first match of the day firing on all cylinders as they took the first set, 25-18. Kaili Doctor (Mars, Pa./Pine-Richland/North Carolina A&T State) led the Eagles' offense with four kills in the set, producing four points. Behind Doctor, the Eastern offense recorded a hot .394 hitting percentage in the first frame.  
 
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan then lost the second set, 25-19, tying the match at a set apiece. The Eagles lost the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.
 
SET 3 | Eastern fought back after the set-two loss to take set three and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Eagles won the set, 25-21, propelled by a solid showing on the attacking side. Eastern Michigan put together a .385 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set win. The Eagles rallied from down five at 12-7 to grab the victory.
 
SET 4 | Eastern Michigan couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Thundering Herd forced a fifth set with a 25-8 victory. The Eagles fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before falling in the set.
 
SET 5 | Marshall struck first in the final set and never looked back as they took the set, 15-10, granting it the 3-2 match win.

How it Happened – vs. Oakland
SET 1 | The Eagles found themselves in an early deficit, losing a tough first set, 25-19. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as six points as Oakland grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that was tied up nine times before the Golden Grizzlies took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | Eastern then dropped the second set, 25-10, to fall behind in the match, 2-0. The Eagles lost the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | EMU could not win set three and was swept by Oakland. The Eagles fell in a close set, losing, 26-24, in a stanza that was tied 13 times and had four lead changes.
 
Match Notes – vs. Marshall
» Maddie Stayer (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Southern Miss./Jacksonville State) notched her second career double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs. Her 22 assists fall one short of tying a career-high. The graduate student also reached the double-digit mark in assists for the fourth time as an Eagle and 13th time in her collegiate career.
» Kendal Bonney (Pioneer, Ohio/North Central) recorded a career-best with eight digs in the contest, surpassing her previous career-high of three. She also reached double-digit kills for the fourth time in her career.
» Ava Siefke (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) tabbed her seventh career game with double-digit digs with 14.
» Ella Voorhees (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown/Southern Miss.) notched 10+ assists (16) for the sixth time as an Eagle. Her performance also marks the 20th time eclipsing the double-digit mark in helpers in her career.
» With 11 kills, Doctor secured her fourth double-digit kills performance as an Eagle and the 15th of her career.
» Eastern had more kills, assists, and digs than the Thundering Herd. The match marked the sixth time it had more kills than its opponent in the Head Coach Kevin Foeman era (4-2 record), and its seventh occurrence out-digging its opponent.  
» Hannah Blaney (Saline, Mich./Saline/Rhode Island) posted her 51st career match with 10 or more digs. She recorded 13 in the contest.  
» Freshman Taeley Mahler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) made her career debut as she earned court time in the fourth set.
 
Match Notes – vs. Oakland
» Mahler recorded the first kill in her career in the third set. She went on to drill four kills in the match on a .800 hitting percentage.
» Surabhi Srinivasan (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin-Jerome) tied a career-best with 10 digs in the match. She initially established the career-high at Central Michigan University, Nov. 15, 2023.
» With 11 kills, Doctor secured her fifth double-digit kills performance as an Eagle and the 16th of her career.
» Taylor Smith (Pewamo, Mich./Pewamo-Westphalia) eclipsed the double-digit mark in assists for the second time in her career, as she notched 12 helpers in the match. The performance marked the freshman's first time leading the team in assists.
 
Historical Notes – vs. Marshall
» After the match, the Eagles remain in the all-time series lead when facing the Thundering Herd, as the Eagles now hold a 10-4 record against Marshall.
 
Historical Notes – vs. Oakland
» After Friday's match, Eastern still holds a commanding lead in the all-time series against the Golden Grizzlies, compiling a 25-9 record.
» The match against Oakland concluded the EMU Tournament for all teams competing. The tournament was the first one hosted at Eastern since the 2003 campaign.
 
Up Next
Eastern will embark on its third tournament of the season in the Comfort Inn Invitational, hosted by Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky., Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14. The Eagles will first face The University of Evansville Aces Friday at 1 p.m.
