Gómez Hat Trick: Kicker Named MAC Award Winner Again

Kicker has been named the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third week in a row
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly football award winners Monday, Sept. 23, with Eastern Michigan University kicker Jesús Gómez earning the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor for the third consecutive week. Gómez (Puebla, Mexico/Prepa Tec Puebla), who is averaging 10.5 points per game, scored 12 points on three field goals and three extra points in the Eagles' 36-0 win over St. Francis University Saturday, Sept. 21, inside Rynearson Stadium.
Gómez continued his outstanding form as the lefty kicker was once again perfect on field goal attempts to record double-digit points for the second week in a row. Gómez, who was good from 49, 40, and 37-yards, has now scored at least eight points in all four games this year after scoring eight at UMass (Aug. 31), nine at Washington (Sept. 7), 13 against Jacksonville State (Sept. 14), and 12 against SFU. He has connected on multiple field goals in all four games, including three makes in each of the last three games for the Eagles with his 11 makes standing just one shy of his season total from 2023 and three away from his career-best 14 makes in 2022.
The MAC leader in scoring with 42 points, Gómez' 11 makes rank tied for the national lead with Blake Craig of Missouri and Collin Rogers of SMU having both scored 11 field goals as well. Additionally, the trio are each averaging 2.75 made field goals per game, which ranks first among all kickers in the FBS. For his career, has connected on 77 extra points and 37 field goals for 188 points, which rank him sixth, fifth, and seventh, respectively, on the Eastern all-time scoring ledger. Tim Henneghan (1986-89) is the next player in line on all three of those lists as his career has him fifth with 92 PATs, fourth with 38 field goals, and sixth with 206 total points.
In four weeks of action, Gómez is the second Eagle to earn a weekly award from the MAC and the only repeat winner. James Djonkam (Springfield, Va./West Springfield/Independence CC/Arizona State) earned a share of the MAC Defensive Player of the Week accolade, Sept. 2, for the first award of the year for Eastern.
Gómez and the Eagles return to action Saturday, Sept. 28, when they open MAC play on the road at Kent State University. The Eagles and Golden Flashes are set to square off at 3:30 p.m. inside Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio, and will be streamed live on ESPN+. The game also can be heard live on WEMU (89.1 FM) and The Varsity Network app with Tom Helmer, Rob Rubick, and Greg Steiner calling the action.
