Nina Larosa swam the seventh-fastest 100y breaststroke in program history while Kiersten Russell notched the fifth-fastest 100y backstroke

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team wrapped up the third of four days at the 2024 Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by Ohio University at the OU Aquatic Center. After day three, Eastern remains in sixth with 188 points.

How it Happened

Day three featured seven events – the 100 butterfly, 400y IM, 200y freestyle, 100y breaststroke, 100y backstroke, 200y freestyle relay and 3m diving. 

Olivia Clarino (Toronto, Ontario/Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute) got things off to a solid start for the Eagles with her 55.68 qualifying mark in the 100y butterfly prelims Friday morning. Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King's Academy) narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals, placing 17th in 56.32. Katarina Pastar (Vienna, Austria/Gymnasium am Augarten) posted a time of 56.44 for 19th place. Siporah Sang (London, Ontario/Sir Fredrick Banting Secondary School) garnered a personal-best time of 57.02 for 22nd place while Katie Shoen (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) completed the event in 57.18 for 25th place.

In the finals, Clarino picked up three points for the Eagles with her time of 55.71.

Junior Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) and Morgan Hofmeister (Powell, Ohio) were 19th and 20th, respectively, in the 400y IM. Szadorski notched a time of 4:31.54 while Hofmeister registered a time of 4:32.86. Sydney Ulmer (York, Pa./Central York) wrapped up the event with a 27th-place finish with a time of 4:43.04.

The 200y freestyle saw Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Ky./St. Henry District) touch the wall in 20th place for the Eagles. The freshman notched a lifetime-best time of 1:51.70. Ali Kudo (Guelph, Ontario/John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute) was not far behind, snagging 22nd place with a mark of 1:52.14. Teammate Ashley George (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) accounted for a 27th-place effort with a time of 1:52.87. Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast) garnered a personal-best mark of 1:54.75, which was good for 34th place.

A trio of Eagles posted marks in the top-16 of the 100y breaststroke prelims, securing spots for them in the finals. Szadorski tallied a collegiate-best time of 1:02.84 for ninth place, besting Taylor Harris (Tiffin, Ohio/Calvert) (10th place) by just 16 hundredths of a second (1:03.00). Rookie Nina Larosa (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) earned a spot in the finals with her 12th-place finish in 1:03.11. 

In the finals, Larosa rose to the top. She touched the wall in 1:03.00, which was good enough for ninth place. The time also marks the seventh fastest in program history. Szadorski took home 11th place after recording a mark of 1:03.15. Harris was just behind her, snagging a 12th-place finish with a time of 1:03.42.

Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline) secured a bid to the finals with a qualifying mark of 55.25 in the 100y backstroke prelims Friday morning. The time was good enough for 13th place. Sang narrowly missed out on the finals, posting a personal-best time of 55.79 for 18th place. Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole) registered a time of 56.77 for 23rd place while fellow freshman Pastar was 27th after touching the wall in 58.22. 

Russell accounted for a lifetime-best time of 54.33 in the finals, securing a ninth-place finish. The time marked the fifth-fastest in program history.  

In the 3-meter diving, Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario/Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) led the way for the Eagles with a 10th-place performance. She accounted for 271.70 points. Ciara Wheeler (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) was 11th after totaling 254.35 points while Savannah Fisk (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) was 16th with 222.85 points.  

The quartet of Shoen, Christie, Noble, and Russell swam the 200y freestyle relay in 1:31.82. The time was good enough for fourth place, helping the team pick up 30 points.
