Chittum Goes the Distance, Hugo Posts 3-for-3 Day in Sunday Finale

Hugo adds three hits while extending his hitting streak to six in the loss
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Nick Chittum (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) threw eight innings without allowing an earned run, but the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the series finale, 3-1, at the University of Southern Indiana Sunday, Feb. 25, at the USI Baseball Field.
Chittum conceded just four hits while striking out four batters to go with a trio of unearned runs. Chittum did not walk any Screaming Eagle batters.
Junior Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) recorded three of EMU's five hits, highlighted his first home run of the season. Hugo reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances while adding two stolen bases.
Both teams are 2-5 on the season.
How it Happened:
The Eagles left the bases loaded in the first inning before Southern Indiana tallied a pair of unearned runs in the second inning.
Hugo cut the EMU deficit in half with a solo home run in the sixth inning, however, USI responded with one run of its own in the bottom of the frame.
Eastern stranded four runners over the final three innings.

» Hugo recorded his second multi-steal game of his career as he also swiped two bases at Belmont University, Feb. 18.
» Hugo, who holds a six-game hitting streak, tallied multiple hits in back-to-back contests after a two-hit day at USI, Feb. 24. Hugo posted one three-hit game prior to Sunday in his career, which was against Central Michigan University, May 6, 2023.
» Hugo's three-hit showing was EMU's first of the season.
» Chittum's eight innings pitched topped his previous career high of six innings, set against the University of Toledo, April 21, 2023.
» The last EMU pitcher to complete 8.0 innings of work was Luke McGuire at Ohio University, April 10, 2021.
» It marked the first complete game for Eastern Michigan since Frankie Volkers at Kent State University, May 20, 2022.
» Chittum tossed a career-high 106 pitches.
» EMU outhit its opponent for the sixth time this season, moving to 2-4 in such games. The only game EMU has not outhit its opponent was an 11-8 loss at USI, Feb. 23.
Historical Notes
» The Eagles of Eastern Michigan and the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana faced off for the third time in each of their respective program histories with USI leading the all-time series record at 2-1.
