Treasure Thompson led the Eagles

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team saw a 13-point performance from the bench, but fell 48-37 to the Miami University RedHawks on the road Saturday, Feb. 24, inside Millett Hall. 
 
Treasure Thompson (Joliet, Ill./Bolingbrook/LSU) led the Eagles (6-19, 2-12 MAC) with nine points. Tayra Eke (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset/LIU) also tacked on six points and 10 rebounds and Kennedi Myles (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills/Illinois/Marquette) chipped in as well with eight points and eight rebounds.
 
Eastern Michigan grabbed 35 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Miami's 29, led by Eke's 10 boards.
 
The Eastern Michigan defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 17 Miami turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Olivia Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind./Southside) led the way individually for the Eagles with three steals.
 
How It Happened
Eastern Michigan struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 31-16 halftime deficit.
 
Miami continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-16 advantage before EMU went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Eke, to trim its deficit to 35-25 with 22 seconds to go in the third. The RedHawks countered and stretched their lead to 38-25 heading into the fourth. The Green and White played well near the basket, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
 
Miami kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 48-29 advantage before Eastern Michigan went on an 8-0 run to shrink the deficit to 48-37 with 42 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. EMU took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.

 » Eke's 10 boards against Miami marked the Spaniard's seventh contest this season with double-digit rebounds and the 15th of her career. Her season-high stands at 12 boards at Bowling Green State University, Jan. 10, while her career high sits at 14 versus the University of Southern Indiana, Dec. 10, 2022.  
» Smith recorded three steals in the game against Miami, Feb. 24, marking the first time this season she has collected three or more in a single game and the 6th of her career. The last time the sophomore recorded the feat was when she earned three against Ohio University, one season ago. 
» Thompson finished the game in Oxford going a clean 4-for4 from the field. It marked her fifth career game shooting 1.000 percent from the field with the last time being in her first appearance of the season, a 68-65 victory over SIUE, Nov. 18, 2023, where she went 1-for-1. 
» Additionally, Thompson joined Nia Boston (Stockton, Calif./Modesto Christian/Delta College/Mesa CC) as the only two Eagles to go perfect from the free throw line. It was Thompson's second game going a clean 1.000 percent from the charity stripe and Boston's seventh after posting six with Mesa Community College. 
» The Eagles held the RedHawks to only 32.7 percent shooting from the field. It was the 16th opponent the Green and White have held below 44.9 percent shooting, going 4-12 in such games and 3-7 under interim Head Coach Ke'Sha Blanton
» Eastern Michigan lost despite a 35-29 rebounding advantage. It marked the 14th time this season the Eagles have out-rebounded their opponent going 6-8. 
» Lachelle Austin (Redford, Mich./Wayne Memorial) made the single three-pointer for Eastern Michigan going 1-of-4 from beyond the yard marking the junior's 14th season game with a single make from three-point land, tying the same amount of games she secured the feat in her rookie season. As a sophomore, Austin connected on a three-pointer in 22 total contests.
 
Historical Notes
» After her 10 rebounds against Miami, Feb. 24, Eke sits just 27 boards away from her career milestone 500. Additionally, the junior is just 5 blocks away from her career milestone 150.
