Eagles Drop First Series Game at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered an 11-8 setback to the Screaming Eagles despite an early offensive showing in the first game of the series at the University of Southern Indiana Friday, Feb. 23.

The Eagles (1-4, 0-0 MAC) received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely. Sophomore Ty Stolarski (Medina, Ohio/Medina Senior/Akron) (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Eastern Michigan.

Offensively, the Eagles were paced by senior Kyle Schroedle (Redding, Calif./University Prep/Crown College), who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Cooper Vance (New Waterford, Ohio/Mohawk) compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Junior Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich./Essexville Garber) also helped out for Eastern Michigan, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

How it Happened:
The Eagles were off to a hot start scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning including a two-run home run from Schroedle and a two-run double from Vance. On defense, starting on the mound was Bobby Jones (Loveland, Ohio/St. Xavier/Xavier) who retired the inning leaving USI scoreless with three runners left on base and a 5-0 lead.

Both Eastern Michigan and Southern Indiana were silent through the next three frames until Southern Indiana scored its first run on a wild pitch. The Screaming Eagles then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 5-4 until the Eagles expanded their advantage in the sixth. Junior Lucas Johnson (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale Secondary/Wright State) came across to score the lone run of the inning for Eastern Michigan, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Eagles.

Southern Indiana came back to even the ballgame at six before EMU reclaimed an 8-6 advantage in the seventh inning. The Eagles scored twice, with one run coming across on senior  Glenn Miller's (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater/Spring Arbor) single. The Green and White were unable to hold the lead, as Southern Indiana scored five times over the remaining two innings to grab the 11-8 win.

Game Notes:
» Every Eagles starter reached base safely in the loss marking the first time accomplishing the feat this season. The Eagles were close in their most recent game at Belmont, Feb. 18, as every starter in the lineup but one safely reached base in the 9-7 loss.
» Eastern Michigan's highest-scoring inning was the first, when it pushed five runs across. It was the second time this season the Green and White have secured five runs in the first inning of a game with the last time being in the first game of the Sunday doubleheader at Belmont, Feb. 18. The Eagles also scored five runs to open that 16-6 road victory over the Bruins.
» Schroedle homered in his first at bat for the second time this season, scoring two Eagles once more, marking the third home run of the year for the senior. The California native hit a season-high two home runs in the final game of the series at Belmont, Feb. 18.
» Schroedle led the Eagles at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Schroedle has left the ballpark multiple times in the first five games of play with three home runs so far. One year ago, the right fielder left the park seven times.
» The Eastern offense has seen three different Eagles homer at least once in a game five times this season. One year ago, EMU homered just three times through the first five games of the season from three different former Eagles.
» Four EMU hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame as Miller, Schroedle, Giano Zuccaro (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea Midpark/Charleston), and Blake McRae (Armada, Mich./Romeo/Lansing C.C.) each produced two hits each in the loss.
» The Eagles drew eight walks from Southern Indiana pitching, marking a team season-high. The previous high was seven free trips to first base in the third game of the series at Belmont, Feb. 18.
» Eastern Michigan pitchers faced 48 Southern Indiana hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out nine.
» Finishing the game with 11 hits, the Eagles tabbed three consecutive games with double-digit hits for the first time in the 2024 season. Last season, EMU accomplished the feat in three straight games six times with the longest streak being seven from April 9, 2023-April, 18, 2023.
» Hugo doubled down the left field line in his first plate appearance of the day. The two-base hit marked the third extra-base hit of the season.
» Finishing the first game 2-for-6 with an RBI, Miller captured his second multi-hit performance of the season. Last season, Miller tabbed 14 multi-hit games.
» Hugo swiped a base for the second consecutive game after posting two steals in the final game at Belmont, Feb. 18.
» Eastern Michigan pitchers produced a season high tying nine strikeouts in the game. The last time the Eagles sat nine batters down was when they did so in the second game of the Belmont series, Feb. 17.

Historical Notes
» The Eagles of Eastern Michigan and the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana faced off for the first time in each of their respective program histories with USI taking the inaugural win.
