EMU Triumphs Over Buffalo in MAC Canned Food Drive Competition

Donations benefit Swoop's Pantry and the Kroger Corporation's Fight to End Childhood Hunger
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University emerged victorious in the Mid-American Conference Canned Food Drive Competition, showcasing an extraordinary effort by student-athletes, staff, and fans to support the community. Led by EMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the athletic department collected an impressive 3,433 canned goods, far surpassing the University at Buffalo's total of 1,228.
The spirited competition fostered school pride and served a greater purpose – addressing hunger within and around the campus community. Donations collected at EMU events have been directed to Swoop's Pantry, a vital on-campus resource, and will also support the Kroger Corporation's Fight to End Childhood Hunger initiative.
"It was inspiring to see all of our student-athletes and administrators come together to support such an incredible organization," said Sam Borgert, EMU SAAC President and Lacrosse student-athlete. "I am so proud of and thankful for everyone who worked to make this drive such a huge success. A special shout out to the members of our Eastern Michigan SAAC for their efforts!"
Adding to the friendly rivalry, the competition's terms required the athletic director from the non-winning school to wear the winning team's colors. True to his word, University at Buffalo Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt donned an EMU football jersey and helmet during the #MACtion game at Rynearson Stadium, Nov. 20.
"We're incredibly proud of how the EMU community rallied together for such an important cause," said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "This effort reflects the passion and compassion of our student-athletes, staff, and fans. The donations will make a meaningful impact on our campus and beyond."
EMU Athletics continues its commitment to combating hunger and will accept non-perishable food donations through December to further support the Kroger Corporation's mission to end childhood hunger.
