Eastern posted an 89 percent graduation rate among student-athletes
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University Athletics has again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence, achieving its highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in program history. According to the latest NCAA report released Wednesday, Nov. 20, EMU posted an impressive overall GSR of 89%, matching its record set during the 2022-23 season. This achievement marks the 10th consecutive year the university has recorded a GSR of 80% or higher, representing a remarkable 17-point increase since the 2010-11 academic year.
"Academic success is a cornerstone of Eastern Michigan Athletics and a source of great pride for our department," said Scott Wetherbee, Vice President/Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes demonstrate exceptional dedication, excelling both in their sports and classroom. This success would not be possible without the tireless efforts of our faculty, academic support staff, and coaches, who are deeply committed to helping our student-athletes achieve their academic goals."
The GSR, developed by the NCAA to better reflect the mobility of today's college students, accounts for student-athletes who graduate, transfer to other institutions, or leave their programs for professional opportunities, provided they do so in good academic standing.
For the most recent graduating cohort (2017-18), Eastern Michigan saw standout performances across multiple programs. Men's and women's golf, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, and women's volleyball all achieved perfect GSR scores of 100%. Notably, gymnastics secured its 17th consecutive perfect score, while volleyball posted its 14th straight 100%, and women's golf reached this milestone for the eighth consecutive year.
Every EMU program posted a GSR of 78% or higher, with 11 teams improving or maintaining their performance from the previous year. Among the women's programs, all nine recorded scores of at least 85%, with seven exceeding 90%. On the men's side, golf led the way with a perfect 100%, while men's basketball achieved its highest GSR at 93%, reflecting a staggering 53-point improvement from its 2006-07 performance.
The Graduation Success Rate includes data about the most recent six-year graduating class of student-athletes receiving athletics aid and entering college as freshmen in 2017-18. The GSR is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes graduating within a six-year window, accounting for transferring student-athletes coming into the institution and leaving the institution in good standing.
Eastern Michigan also excelled within the Mid-American Conference, tying for first place in six categories: men's golf, women's golf, women's basketball, gymnastics, soccer, and volleyball. According to the federal graduation rate, the university's student-athletes outperformed the general student body by 24%, underscoring their commitment to academic excellence.
The federal graduation rate, a narrower metric compared to the GSR, provides a historical comparison between student-athletes and non-athletes. Despite its limitations, the data highlights the extraordinary academic accomplishments of EMU student-athletes over time.
