Cross Country Readies for NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships

The Eagles will send seven runners from each team and aim to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country programs are set to race at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and the Cleveland Sports Commission, at Silver Creek Metropark, in Norton, Ohio Friday, Nov. 15. 

Eastern will send seven harriers from each team, and aims to qualify for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The top two teams automatically qualify from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams, 13 additional teams will be awarded an at-large bid. 38 individuals will be selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process, and the first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships.
 
The women will race in the 6k while the men will compete in the 10k. The women's race will go off first at 11 a.m. and the men's race will follow at 12 p.m.
 
Athletes competing in the women's race include Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central),  Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of the Hague), Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport),  Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso),  Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School),  Anna Bathellier (Ile d'Yeu, France/College Les Sicardieres), and Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac).
 
Runners competing in the men's race are Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix), Ronan Codyre (Auckland, New Zealand/Macleans College), Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College),  Isaac Garcia (Greely, Col./South County),  Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School), and  Aaron Schwieterman (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg).

LAST TIME AT THE NCAA GREAT LAKES REGIONAL
Eastern Michigan was last at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 10, 2023. As a team, the Eagles had 522 points (19th place) in the men's race and 208 points (sixth place) in the women's race. 
 
The 208 points are the least the Eastern women have totaled in the regional meet since 2018, when they posted 231 points, also finishing in sixth place . Esme Davies and Marcus Kemp led the Eagles in their respective races with times of 20:53.6 (Davies - 6k) and 31:05 (Kemp - 10k). 
 
Davies cracked the top-25 for an 18th place finish, good for an all-region nod, also marking the best finish from an Eastern woman since current EMU track & field Assistant Coach Natalie Cizmas finished in 10th place (20:33.3) in 2019. Furthermore, Marchant missed all-region honors by just once spot last season as she slotted 26th in 21:04.9. 
 
ALL-TIME AT THE GREAT LAKES REGIONAL
Dating back to 2000, the Eastern Michigan cross country programs have been to the Great Lakes Regional 24 times for each team. Its best finish at the meet was second on the men's side in 2000 (100 points) and 2002 (70 points), and fourth on the women's side in 2017 (146 points)
 
RANKED IN THE USTFCCCA REGIONAL RANKINGS 
Both of Eastern Michigan's teams are ranked in the Great Lakes Region, per the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). As of Nov. 4, the women are ranked No. 9 and the men stand at No. 13.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Eastern Michigan last competed Saturday, Nov. 2, at the MAC Championships, at the Ball State University Cross Country Course in Muncie, Ind. Both programs finished in third place as a team with 92 points in the women's race and 78 in the men's race. Marchant led the way in the women's 6k in 20:31.8 and Peterson paced the men in the 8k with a time of 24:30.1.
 
PERSONAL BESTS
Eastern Michigan last had three personal bests in its races EMU Fall Classic. Along with Nicholas Kline (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills) (5k - 17:00.1) and Frankie Moore (Columbia,Md./Oakland Mills) (5k - 19:00.2), Drew Graves (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II) had a 5k personal-best of 18:23.90.
