Eastern Michigan Falls to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team got a 21-point showing from the bench, but fell 69-57 to the Bowling Green State University Falcons on the road Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Stroh Center. 
 
Tayra Eke (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset/LIU) had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles (4-9, 1-2). Lachelle Austin (Redford, Mich./Wayne Memorial) also tacked on nine points off the bench and Kennedi Myles (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills/Illinois/Marquette) chipped in as well with six points and five assists.
 
Eastern Michigan shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 15 assists on 20 made field goals. Myles' five assists paced the Eagles.
 
The Green and White did a great job disrupting Bowling Green shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Eke's five rejections led the way individually for the Eagles.
 
How It Happened
EMU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-31 halftime deficit.
 
The Green and White's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Eagles faced a 61-49 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Eastern Michigan's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 18 third-quarter points.
 
Eastern Michigan could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 69-57. Eastern Michigan fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its eight points.
 
Game Notes
» Eke's 15 points and 12 rebounds was good for her third season double-double and the eighth of her career. The last time the junior posted double figures in both points and rebounds was when she posted 11 points and 11 boards at Northern Illinois University, Jan. 3. 
» Eke's 15 points against the Falcons marks the fifth consecutive game with double-digit points. In addition, it was the seventh of the season and the 20th of her career. It was also the eighth time in her career with 15+ points. 
» Eke recorded multiple blocks in the setback for the seventh time this season. Last season, the junior recorded the feat in 17 contests. Additionally, it was the 20th time in her career recording three or more in a single game. 
» Eke recorded five blocks in the loss marking the third consecutive game the junior has recorded four or more. The five blocks was the second of the season by Eke, one shy of her career-high set against Army West Point, Dec. 1, 2021 as an LIU Shark.
»  Austin posted nine points in the contest. It was the first time the junior has produced over six points in a game since she earned a 27-piece at Lindenwood University, Dec. 1. 
» Freshman Cali Denson (Milwaukie, Ore./Milwaukie Academy of the Arts) was in the starting lineup for the 12th consecutive game after doing so for the first time in her career in the road game at Georgia Southern University, Nov. 11. Denson continues to be the only freshman this season to be in the starting five.
» Myles provided five assists in the contest at BGSU, marking the second time this season with five in one game. The last time the graduate student recorded five assists in a single outing was against North Dakota State University, Dec. 1. Additionally, it was the fourth contest with at least three. 
» Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb./Hershey/Northeast C.C.) drilled two three-pointers from beyond the arc for the second time this season after going 2-for-4 at IUPUI, Dec. 15. The two makes from three tie her career high. 
» EMU won the blocking-battle against the Falcons, 5-3. It was just the fourth time this season the Eagles have out-blocked their opponent. Last season, the team recorded more blocks than its foe in 19 contests. 
 
Historical Notes
» Wednesday's matchup marked the 76th meeting between Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green. The Falcons lead the all-time series, 56-20. 
» The double-double posted by Eke was the eighth of her career, placing her 15th in EMU career double-doubles leaders history.
